NORFOLK

The Norfolk Department of Public Health has issued a beach closure advisory for two beaches in Ocean View.

A statement from the department Tuesday said recent testing revealed enterococci bacterial levels exceeding state water quality standards at beaches at 5th Bay Street and Ocean View Avenue and at Captain's Quarters on Little Bay.

Signs have been posted at the sites, the department said. Additional water samples were expected to be taken Wednesday afternoon

Enterococci bacteria are organisms used to detect fecal contamination in recreational waters. While the bacteria do not cause illness, the department said, their presence is closely correlated to the presence of other disease-causing organisms.

People swimming or playing in waters with bacteria levels higher than the state standards have an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal illness, the department said.

For additional information contact the Norfolk Department of Public Health, Environmental Division, at 757-683-2824.
