Beaches Open Again After Last Week's Power Outage - Patch.com

All beaches that were closed after last week's power outage re-opened Thursday.

Beaches were closed from Solana Beach south through Del Mar to Scripps Pier, as well as Bayside Park in Chula Vista and the eastern shore of Silver Strand State Beach in San Diego Bay. This was after the massive outage caused two of the city's sewer pump stations to shut down, triggering the spills, city of San Diego officials said.

About 1.9 million gallons of sewage spilled into the Los Penasquitos
Lagoon, which empties into the ocean at Torrey Pines State Park south of Del Mar.

In Chula Vista, about 125,000 gallons of sewage spilled into the
Sweetwater Channel, west of Interstate 5 and Highway 54. That sent waste into San Diego Bay and closed Bayside Park in Chula Vista. Across the bay, it contaminated waters on the bay side of Silver Strand, south of Coronado, according to beach officials.

The outage first struck at about 3:40 p.m. last Thursday. Power was
fully restored to San Diego county about 12 hours later, San Diego Gas & Electric reported.
