Beverley Hotel Closing Costs Local Restaurant Owner - WHSV
The Beverley Hotel in Staunton is being shut down by the city because of numerous violations.
All of its residential tenants and businesses will have to evacuate the building by next Thursday.
Taste of India, an Indian restaurant, is among this list and has been forced to shut down.
Ashok Konver, the owner of the restaurant, says this decision will significantly hurt him financially.
"I don't have money. I spend already more than $150,000 there, so I don't have money. I'm a small man, I'm not a rich guy like other franchise companies are," said Konver.
He says water began leaking into his restaurant last month.
Dustin Thacker, a tenant of the building who lives directly above Taste of India, says he also experienced major water problems.
"That sewage started to leak up from whenever people would flush their toilet or when I'd flush mine. Initially people that it was coming from downstairs at the restaurant and that it was coming up, but it was from everybody's toilets. Then it started to leak down into the restaurant," said Thacker.
Konver had to shut down the restaurant last month for unsanitary issues once the water became sewer water.
Meanwhile, he has continued to pay his salaried employees even though the restaurant has been closed.
Konver has another restaurant in Harrisonburg, but he says he does not have enough money to open another location right now.
However, he hopes to be able to reopen another Taste of India in Staunton in the future.
