— Rachel Loy, the Boynton Beach Police officer who wrecked her cruiser into a concrete pole last week, was just a rookie when she was involved in her first at-fault accident while on the job.

It was June 2007, when she heard the call of an armed assault in progress, activated her siren and lights, and headed to the 200 block of Northwest Seventh Court. She'd never make it on time.

On her way to the call, Loy was involved in a crash as she entered the intersection of Martin Luther King and Seacrest boulevards. A Kia struck the push bar of her cruiser, but no one was injured, according to the incident report. Nevertheless, Loy received a written reprimand for attempting to proceed through the intersection "without first ensuring that the intersection was clear."

The watch commander detailed in the report that Loy, who was hired in late 2006, was a "young and inexperienced" officer and that the incident would be a "learning experience for her." He added that "no further investigation was warranted."

Four months later, the side-view mirror on the passenger side of her police cruiser hit a garbage can while she was on patrol around Northwest Sixth Avenue. She was suspended for one day because it was her second accident in sixth months.

Fast-forward to Tuesday of last week, when Loy crashed into a concrete pole while responding to a backup request to reports of a burglary. She was driving northbound on Seacrest Boulevard when she lost control of her car for unknown reasons near the 1600 block.

Her car crashed into a concrete light post, which then landed on the patrol car, trapping her and two other officers inside. All three were treated for non-life threatening injuries and released from Delray Medical Center by Wednesday.

The cause of that crash remains under investigation.
