Tar balls pepper the beach in some areas. A quick and easy clean up with the right equipment.

"that request has been denied," says Gulf Shores environmental specialist Brandon Franklin. The request was for certain areas of the beach impacted by Tropical Storm Lee like Little Lagoon Pass where tar balls the size of tennis balls were washing up and along West Beach where Friday patches of tar balls lined the beach.

BP did agree to extend the hours of hand crews, put more manpower on the beaches where necessary and re-assess the beaches. "SCAT will come back and do a more thorough assessment of our beaches based on reports that we had reported to BP," says Franklin.

We may get a better assessment of just how clean the beaches are Saturday when thousands of volunteers will hit the beaches and other waterways in the 24th annual Coastal Clean Up.

"I usually have 350 people come to my site every year." Lisa Kennedy is a zone captain of the area around the public beach. Her volunteers will target garbage left on the beach and if they see any oil or tar balls, "We'll just tell them to report it and we'll take care of it and just don't touch it."

Despite the trash left by beachgoers most of Alabama's beaches look pretty good considering what they've gone through but time can make things worse according to Franklin. "If we wait much longer, with the changing profile of the beach, it maybe covered three inches now. It maybe covered a foot or more a week from now. The sooner the better."
