CANNON BEACH - Artists, art patrons and business community members came together Sept. 16, 1986, to officially found the Cannon Beach Arts Association (CBAA). It was decided that the CBAA would focus on becoming a vehicle for promoting the arts and individual artists in the Cannon Beach community through education, events and exhibits.

Now, 25 years later, the Cannon Beach Arts Association is celebrating its silver anniversary with an open house at the Cannon Beach Gallery from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, with refreshments and live flamenco guitar music by Brian Johnstone. There will be champagne, sparkling cider, appetizers and gourmet desserts created and donated by area chefs.

The idea behind the event is to honor the many individuals who have played a role in the organization over the years, whether as an exhibiting artist, a volunteer at the desk, a patron of the arts or a member of the board of directors. Like so many of the nonprofit organizations in town, the CBAA would not exist today if not for the countless volunteered hours that have kept its programs running over the decades.

A silent auction will be held featuring antique silver, as well as jewelry and other silver themed items donated by local artists and shopkeepers. Visitors are encouraged to wear silver or bring silver, and of course, take a chance to win silver.

Since 1986, the Cannon Beach Arts Association (CBAA) has provided programs and opportunities that enhance and support the arts in Cannon Beach and the surrounding community. The CBAA is a nonprofit multidisciplinary arts organization run almost entirely by volunteers, allowing more than 97 percent of its budget to go directly to a wide variety of programs. These programs include a children's summer art camp, scholarships for high school seniors, a $3,000 individual artist grant and the Cannon Beach Gallery. The Cannon Beach Arts Association programs are all funded through members' contributions and grants from business, foundations, and government agencies.
