ST. GEORGE – Descendants of the survivors of the Mountain Meadows Massacre will join federal officials, church representatives and others for a ceremony at the massacre site in western Washington County on Sept. 11.

New protections are in line for the site, where a group of Mormon militiamen killed some 120 California-bound emigrants, mostly from Arkansas, during the week of Sept. 11, 1857. The federal government declared the site a National Historic Landmark in June.

Jock Whitworth, superintendent of Zion National Park, is slated to present plaques as part of the ceremony, to mark the culmination of a years-long effort by the Mountain Meadows Association, the Mountain Meadows Massacre Descendants, the Mountain Meadows Monument Foundation, and the landowners—The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the U.S. Forest Service—to seek National Historic Landmark status for the site.

The plaque ceremony, which is expected to last one hour, will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Sept. 11. Officials expect parking to be limited, and recommend those wishing to attend arrive an hour early to find parking and be seated before the ceremony begins. The Mountain Meadows Massacre Historic Site is located just west of State Route 18 between St. George and Enterprise.
