Cheapflights.co.uk Finds Travel Preferences True to (Stereo)Type - MarketWatch (press release)
Posted on Monday, September 12, 2011 by destination tips travel
LONDON, Sep 12, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- For Brits it's a pub crawl; give us a pint and a spot of sun, more than often in sunny Spain, and we're happy. Americans, on the other hand, tend to prefer their own vast country, so staycations are very popular, while for Germans, Majorca takes the top spot.
Pure prejudice? No way! Having analysed search queries for July and August from Cheapflights' various international flight search sites, Cheapflights.co.uk, the UK's leading travel deals comparison site, confirms the common stereotype as the real deal.
THE TYPICAL BRIT
Holiday requirements: Sun, fun, alcohol, and relaxation. We're instantly recognisable for being loud, sunburnt, and most likely to be holding a pint.
Top 5 favoured destinations for July and August: Alicante, Malaga, Bangkok, Dalaman, and Tenerife -- typical.
THE TYPICAL AMERICAN
Holiday requirements: As nearly two out of three U.S. citizens do not possess a passport, the latest stats from the State Department show that 63 percent of Americans can't even go to Canada. Thus, the popularity of the staycation. Thankfully, the vast continent provides a wide variety of fantastic destinations.
Top 5 favoured destinations for July and August: New York, Tampa Florida, Phoenix in Arizona, Boston, and Chicago.
THE TYPICAL ITALIAN
Holiday requirements: If they're not holidaying at local beaches, lakes, or resorts along their own Riviera, they're decked out in the latest designer eyewear leaving fancy footprints in some of the world's chicest cities.
Top 5 favoured destinations for July and August: London, New York, Barcelona, Cantania off the coast of Sicily, and Paris.
THE TYPICAL SPANIARD
Holiday requirements: Spain has clearly felt the effects of the economic crisis. As such, most Spaniards chose to holiday domestically for the months of July and August, given that sunny beaches and good Spanish food are the essentials for most, staying in their own country is a logical choice.
Top 5 favoured destinations for July and August: The most popular cities included Madrid and Barcelona, while popular resorts included Majorca and Ibiza. There was only one outsider among the favourites, which is London. The British capital attracted hoards of Spaniards during summer 2011.
THE TYPICAL GERMAN
Holiday requirements: True to form, the Germans have just one requirement, which is a sunny beach, preferably in Spain or Turkey, on which they can relax and work on a tan.
Top 5 favoured destinations for July and August: While Majorca still holds first place for Germans, Turkey is another strong favourite with Antalya, Istanbul and Izmir occupying three of the Top five preferred travel destinations. Last, but certainly not least, is Bangkok, another typical favourite.
