Miami Beach-bound traffic on the Julia Tuttle Causeway has been shut down due a fatal car crash involving four vehicles, the Florida Highway Patrol said Sunday.

All eastbound lanes on the causeway are expected to be closed for several more hours. Traffic in the area is being rerouted north on the boulevard, west to Interstate 95 or to eastbound MacArthur and Venetian causeways, which were backed up Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred at around 11 a.m. Sunday when eastbound traffic from Biscayne Boulevard approaching the causeway stalled.

A motorist driving a green Honda did not realize the traffic had come to a stop and slammed into the rear of a stopped vehicle, which sparked a chain reaction crash involving two more vehicles ahead, said FHP spokesman Officer Joe Sanchez.

The driver who rear-ended the first stalled vehicle was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he eventually died. A second motorists in a black Mercedes-Benz was transported to Mount Sinai Medical Center on Miami Beach, Sanchez said. His condition is unknown.

The investigation into the crash is expected to last several hours.
