GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida safety Matt Elam has settled a misdemeanor alcohol possession charge.

The sophomore from West Palm Beach pleaded no contest to possession of alcohol by a minor Monday. He agreed to pay $291 in court fees, do 12 hours of community service and pay a one-time fee of $40 for six months of supervised probation.

Elam, second on the team with 13 tackles, was arrested in July after a Gainesville Police officer observed him carrying a plastic cup that was later found to contain cognac. He was released on his own recognizance after agreeing to a court appearance.

It was Elam's second alcohol-related incident since arriving in Gainesville. He was charged with alcohol possession, pleaded no contest and was fined $121.
