P ONIES ON THE BEACH: The North Avenue beach will be transformed into a polo site for The Grey Goose Chicago Beach Polo World Cup on Saturday and Sunday. Polo greats from around the world will be here to compete in this unique and awesome tournament. Participating in this two-day international event will be eight teams, four of which will be composed of all women competing in the North Beach Women's Polo Cup. The weekend of activities begins Friday with a press conference, cocktail hour and kick-off party. Saturday includes an opening ceremony, match play, fashion show and cocktails, and Sunday, more match play and finals, an awards ceremony and closing party.

A portion of the funds raised from this spectacular spectator sport created by Polo Life's Bruce Orosz will go to the 100 Club of Chicago, which gives aide to the families of fallen firemen and policemen. The host committee includes Joe Ahern, Dan Uslan, Craig Duchossois, Candace Jordan, Mark Mitten, Lou Vasta and Michael Butler. For more info go to: chicagobeachpolo.com

JUST IN: "AN EVENING WITH Valerie Simpson in Honor of Nick Ashford" tribute is Nov. 19 at Northwestern University's Thorne Auditorium and brought to you by the Historymakers. As we all know, Valerie lost her precious hubby and singing/songwriting partner, Nick, 70, to cancer in August. The duo were married over 35 years and were practically attached at the hip. ANGELO DUNDEE, the legendary boxing trainer, whose expertise brought championship belts to the waistlines of such greats as Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and George Foreman, will be in town Oct. 21 for a belated 90th birthday celebration in conjunction with the National Italian American Sports Hall of Fame's 33rd Annual Induction Ceremony and Gala weekend at the NIASHF Hall of Fame and Museum at 1431 W.
