Olympia detectives arrested a housekeeper at the Red Lion Hotel on suspicion of theft Friday after a hotel guest tracked a global positioning system on his missing iPad to the housekeeper's apartment, police said.

Maria Zavala, 47, of 1919 Evergreen Park Drive, was arrested Friday on suspicion of second-degree possession of stolen property, Olympia Police Lt. John Hutchings said.

According to Hutchings: The hotel guest noticed his iPad missing from his room at the Red Lion Hotel on Sept. 9, and there was no forced entry. On Friday, the man tried to track his missing iPad using a GPS that had been installed on the device as an anti-theft measure. The GPS indicated that the iPad was located in an apartment complex at 1919 Evergreen Park Drive.

The man contacted Olympia police, and detectives learned that Zavala, a housekeeper for the hotel, is a renter of one of the apartments at 1919 Evergreen Park Drive. When detectives interviewed her, she admitted to taking the iPad.

Detectives executed a search warrant at Zavala's apartment, and found the man's missing iPad. They also found a laptop, jewelry and other items that might be stolen property.

Hutchings said police are still investigating the case, and anyone who believes they may be a victim should contact Olympia Police Detective Rich Allen at 360-753-8407.

Red Lion General Manager Jay Johnson said Zavala has been suspended pending the outcome of her case. He added that hotel officials believe the theft of the iPad is an isolated incident, because he is not aware of reports by other hotel guests of items missing from their rooms.

"I believe it's isolated," Johnson said.
