Swimming OK at Carlin Park

A no-swimming advisory for Carlin Park was lifted Saturday. The advisory was issued Wednesday after tests found high fecal bacteria levels in beach water, the Palm Beach County Health Department said. The advisory was to have been in place through at least Sept. 26, but was lifted after a test Friday showed the bacteria level was in the "good" range, the health department said.

Gardening event at Abacoa

Volunteers are scheduled to plant strawberries, peppers, eggplant, flowers and more starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Abacoa Community Garden. Located on the west side of Central Boulevard next to the LifeSong Community Church in Abacoa, the garden offers individual plots for a $10 annual membership fee. Organic and sustainable gardening principles are used. The event is sponsored by the Abacoa Property Owners Assembly. Planting volunteers do not have to be members. Missing boa constrictor captured

Police have found an 8-foot-long boa constrictor that escaped Thursday from a resident's home. Several residents were walking along Tequesta Drive and Riverside Drive early Saturday when they noticed the snake and called police, Lt. Jason Turner said. It was captured and taken to police headquarters. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission might take the snake, Turner said.

WEST PALM BEACH

Shooting victim 'critical'

Authorities are investigating a shooting in the Sunset Homes development in suburban West Palm Beach. Palm Beach County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the 2000 block of Longwood Road at 11:30 a.m. Saturday and found the victim outside a home. Sheriff's Lt. Scott Smith said the man, in his mid-50s, was in critical condition at St. Mary's Medical Center. Smith said preliminary reports note that the victim and another man were arguing before the shooting. The second man was in custody, Smith said.

Six recommended for judiciary

Four attorneys who work for government and two in private practice have been recommended to Gov. Rick Scott for appointment as a Palm Beach County judge, replacing Janis Keyser, who was elevated to circuit court. The candidates, selected by the local judicial nominating commission, are county magistrate Sara Alijewicz; Boca Raton attorney Lloyd Comiter, an unsuccessful 2010 judicial candidate; Delray Beach Assistant City Attorney Catherine Kozol; Boynton Beach defense attorney Craig Lawson; South Florida Water Management District attorney Robert Panse; and Assistant County Attorney Andrew Pelino.

District weighs injury settlement

A student hit by a school bus last year could receive a $100,000 settlement from the Palm Beach County School District to pay for his medical bills. Ryan Garcia, 18, was crossing Seminole Pratt-Whitney Road on the morning of Oct. 27, headed for Seminole Ridge High School, when he was hit by a bus turning out of the school. According to a school district report, Garcia's medical bills from his injuries, which included surgery to repair an open facial wound, rib fractures and a brain contusion, exceeded $90,000. The proposed liability claim for $100,000 will be voted on by the school board on Wednesday.

Ricky Williams, 30, is wanted for failing to appear in court on charges of selling cocaine and attaching an unassigned license plate. He was born on Aug. 9, 1981, and has black hair and brown eyes. He is 6 feet 3 inches and 235 pounds. His last known address was on Southeast Third Street in Boynton Beach.

John Keating, 28, is wanted for violation of supervised own recognizance. He was born on March 21, 1983, and has brown hair and brown eyes. He is 6 feet 4 inches and 210 pounds. His last known addresses were on Wing Foot Drive in Jupiter and Smith Drive in North Palm Beach.

These suspects were wanted as of Sept. 15. Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 458-TIPS (8477).
