The annual list was revealed last night at a gala awards ceremony at the InformationWeek 500 Conference taking place at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort, Dana Point, Calif.

In 2010, Iron Mountain's IT, transportation and operations teams set out to improve the way the company delivers its information management services to customers in North America, specifically through its transportation operations. With more than 2,700 vehicles making hundreds of thousands of daily deliveries and pickups, this cross-functional team had to account for driver routes influenced by traffic, weather, time of day, delivery size -- even how an Iron Mountain courier exits a vehicle or picks up a box of customer materials. Additionally, the team had to find a way to integrate six databases used to track service level metrics and courier performance data. The anticipated outcome would be real-time reporting that would enable transportation supervisors to plan more efficient courier routes, and, as a result, deliver better service levels to customers and cost savings for Iron Mountain. While the IT team solved the data integration issue, the field observation team accompanied couriers on routes to gain a better understanding of vehicle and driver-specific variables to help engineer optimal courier practices.
As a result, now planners can now account for customer location, delivery volumes and other variables that influence courier performance and service delivery. In just two quarters after its launch, the initiative realized significant cost savings and improved delivery times for customers by eight percent, while allowing transportation supervisors to gain better understanding of where performance improvement and route optimization opportunities could be found.
