A Kentucky Republican will travel with President Barack Obama on his visit to the Tri-state area.Sen. Rand Paul will travel aboard Air Force One as the president makes his case for his American Jobs Act with the Brent Spence Bridge as a backdrop."I am looking forward to speaking with the president in my home state to address the express need for attention to our nation's critical infrastructure needs," Paul said. "I will present him with my plan to prioritize these projects by freeing up funding to fix our broken roads and bridges, for which America's businesses and commerce (are) so dependent."The bill proposed by Paul would create an emergency bridge fund that would come from money previously set aside for other projects that the Republican senator characterized as unnecessary, including squirrel sanctuaries and tunnels for endangered turtles.A spokesman for the White House admitted Wednesday that Obama's area visit was, at least in part, a political gesture."The reason the president is going to visit the Brent Spence bridge is that this is the bridge connects the home state of the Republican leader of the Senate with the home state of the Republican leader of the House, and it underscores the need for bipartisan cooperation," said Josh Earnest, principal deputy press secretary.Paul, a tea party favorite, will also present his proposal in Louisville to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez at the Sherman Minton Bridge. That Ohio River span has been closed since earlier this month when an inspection revealed structural flaws.
