The sun is rising into a clear sky early on Monday morning on the beach at 14th Street. It's a promising start to a day that's supposed to end with rain.

The official National Weather Service forecast says showers are likely after 2 p.m. In the meantime, forecasters call for clouds and a high of 79 degrees.

Even in the morning there's a steady wind out of the south -- that trip north on the Boardwalk to get that last round of Browns' doughnuts will have a nice tailwind.

The ocean water temperature is 73 degrees, and the surf is small and choppy. High tide is just after 2:30 p.m.

Surf: Hurricane Katia is now a Category 2 storm and tracking up the Atlantic Ocean (still unclear how close to the East Coast). Waves are expected to start to build Tuesday into Wednesday as it moves closer. In the meantime, the two- to three-foot choppy south windswell continues in Ocean City. It's not pretty today.

Traffic: Looks as if the island is jammed for the holiday weekend, but there are no issues this morning.
