A mountain lion was spotted Friday night near state Highway 84 in southern San Mateo County, emergency officials said.

The big cat was seen near the highway and Sequoia Drive in La Honda at about 9:40 p.m.

This mountain lion sighting follows two others earlier this week on Monday and Wednesday nights in Portola Valley.

Residents are advised to keep an eye on small children and avoid hiking or jogging at dawn, dusk or night when mountain lions are most active.

Anyone who encounters a mountain lion should face the animal, make noise and try to appear larger by waving arms and throwing rocks, emergency officials said.
