CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Bob Henry Baber, the Mountain Party's candidate for governor, and two of his children were taken to the hospital Thursday morning after a collision along Interstate 79.

Baber was driving near Morgantown en route to Pittsburgh when a Peterbilt tractor-trailer moved into his lane and collided with his Jeep, said West Virginia State Police Trooper J.G. Baker.

Baber pulled over near the Goshen Road exit in Monongalia County and called police. Troopers stopped the truck about seven miles away on Interstate 68, Baker said.

The driver of the truck, Scott Lunsford, of Clarkesville, Ga., was cited for failure to maintain control, Baker said. Lunsford did not know that he had struck Baber's Jeep, the trooper said.

Baber drove his Jeep from the scene of the accident to meet up with police and initially denied a hospital visit, said Tiffany Washington, spokeswoman for his campaign.

He agreed to be transported to Morgantown's Ruby Memorial Hospital for a precautionary check on himself; his daughter, Jackie, 21; and his son, Cody, 19.

Washington said Baber was having back pain and was "stunned" by the incident. His children were being evaluated by the hospital with non-serious injuries, she said.

Baber was on his way to Pittsburgh International Airport to catch a flight to Utah for his oldest daughter's wedding on Saturday, Washington said.

"If I know Bob Henry, he'll be there in a full body cast if he has to," Washington said.

The election for governor is Oct. 4. Early voting starts Wednesday.
