AIR FORCE: The Falcons enjoyed an early break in the action this past weekend after suffering a 35-19 loss to Mountain West Conference foe TCU back on September 10. Air Force is now 1-1 on the campaign thanks to a 37-20 defeat of South Dakota at home the opening week. Next on the schedule for the Falcons is Tennessee State, another first-time opponent for the academy this season.
BOISE STATE: Kellen Moore again took over the spotlight for the fourth-ranked Boise State Broncos last Friday night as he completed a career-high 32 passes on 42 attempts, leading to a lofty 455 yards and five touchdowns in the 40-15 win over the Toledo Rockets at the Glass Bowl. The Bronco offense sputtered a bit coming out of the gate, but in the second half there was no stopping Moore and his cohorts as they ended up generating 610 total yards. Running back Doug Martin produced 70 yards rushing on 19 attempts and also posted another 122 yards and a score on five receptions. Tyler Shoemaker found enough holes in the Toledo defense to turn his four receptions into 52 yards and three TDs. Next up for the Broncos is a meeting against former Western Athletic Conference foe Tulsa in BSU's home opener this Saturday. Boise State has never lost to the Golden Hurricane, going 5-0 thanks in part to a 28-21 win two seasons ago.COLORADO STATE: Pete Thomas converted 18-of-28 passes for 157 yards and also accounted for the first touchdown of the game, a four-yard run, versus rival Colorado but it simply wasn't enough as the Rams bowed in a 28-14 final in Denver over the weekend. CSU managed a mere 67 yards rushing and 243 yards of offense overall as they suffered their first loss of the season. Thomas, an easy target for oncoming defenders last season, was sacked three times in the decision as well. The Rams are back out on the road again this coming weekend as they tangle with the Utah State Aggies in non-conference action in Logan. Against the Aggies, CSU owns a 35-30-2 series advantage, winning the most recent meeting, 35-24, in 1997.
NEW MEXICO: The Lobos were no match for the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday, suffering an ugly 59-13 loss at home as they watched their losing streak reach six straight. Crusoe Gongbay accounted for the only TD of the game for the Lobos with a two-yard run in the second quarter, the other six points being supplied by kicker James Aho who converted field goals of 44 and 42 yards in the fourth frame of the blowout. Quarterback Tarean Austin completed just 8-of-24 passes for 187 yards, tossed an interception and was sacked twice in the onslaught. The UNM defense allowed Texas Tech to generate a lofty 624 yards of offense, which means the Lobos are now 114th in the country in that department with 508.7 ypg permitted. The Lobos get another crack at breaking into the win column this coming weekend as they host for the first-time ever the Sam Houston State Bearkats in non-conference action in Albuquerque.
SAN DIEGO STATE: Ronnie Hillman ran for 191 yards and four touchdowns as the Aztecs battled back to defeat the Washington State Cougars, 42-24, in non- conference action at Qualcomm Stadium. Hillman, who became just the third player in SDSU history to record five straight 100-yard rushing games, carried the ball a total of 32 times for the Aztecs as they moved to 3-0 to start a season for the first time since 1981. Quarterback Ryan Lindley converted 21- of-37 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns of his own for the hosts as they won their fifth straight game overall. The Aztecs find themselves in another high-profile outing this coming week as they drop in on the Michigan Wolverines and former head coach Brady Hoke in Ann Arbor. Michigan barely survived the first and only other meeting between the programs back in 2004 with a 24-21 triumph.
TCU: Matthew Tucker scored two of TCU's three rushing touchdowns on Saturday afternoon as the squad knocked off the ULM Warhawks, 38-17, in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs ran the ball 43 times, generating 224 yards to take some of the pressure off quarterback Casey Pachall who connected on 16-of-23 passes for 203 yards and a score as well. Defensively, the Frogs were still off their game as they allowed the visitors to generate more than 300 yards, although TCU did hold the opposition scoreless in the second half. The Horned Frogs are set up against another inferior foe in Portland State this coming weekend in Fort Worth, the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
UNLV: Caleb Herring threw for 178 yards and two touchdowns as he helped lead the UNLV Rebels to a surprising 40-20 win over the Hawaii Warriors in non- conference action at Sam Boyd Stadium. Herring completed 17-of-29 passes for the Rebels as they picked up their first win of the 2011 season. Phillip Payne caught both scoring passes from Herring, while Tim Cornett's 80-yard TD run in the first quarter was the longest rushing score for UNLV in more than two decades. The win for the Rebels was just their second in the last 12 outings, the team topping Wyoming on November 13, 2010 by a score of 42-16. Playing at home for the second straight week, the Rebels are set to welcome the Southern Utah Thunderbirds to Las Vegas for a non-conference affair on Saturday night. UNLV has won all three previous meetings between the two teams, capturing a 28-6 victory in the most recent affair more than three decades ago.
WYOMING: The Cowboys started off slow on Saturday afternoon and then had to hold on at the end as the squad slipped by Bowling Green, 28-27, in Ohio to remain perfect on the season at 3-0. The Cowboys, who blocked a potential game-tying PAT with less than three seconds remaining in regulation and forced a total of six turnovers, produced just under 400 yards of total offense. Quarterback Brett Smith converted 23-of-35 passes for 248 yards and a touchdown, while running backs Alvester Alexander and Ghaali Muhammad each scored on the ground for the visitors as well. Next up for the Pokes is a meeting with the nationally-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers, an opponent that has won all five previous meetings between the schools. The most recent of those matchups took place back in 1994 with the Huskers slipping by with a 42-32 triumph.
