Wyoming blocked a late game-tying extra point as the Cowboys held on to beat Bowling Green 28-27 on Saturday at Bowling Green, Ohio.

Trailing 28-14 late in the fourth quarter, Bowling Green's Matt Schilz threw touchdown passes on two consecutive drives. The first, a 32-yard strike to Kamar Jorden, and the second, to Ray Huston for 10 yards, drew the Falcons (2-1) within one. But the Cowboys blocked the ensuing extra point with only three seconds remaining.

Brett Smith led the way for the Wyoming (3-0), connecting on a 10-yard pass to receiver Dominic Rufran to give the Cowboys a 28-14 lead.

Smith, the first true freshman to start for Wyoming since 1974, threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns and added 37 yards on the ground.

Schilz finished with 437 yards passing and four touchdowns in the loss.

The win marks the first 3-0 start for Wyoming since 1996.

COLORADO 28, COLORADO ST. 14

At Denver: Tyler Hansen (Temecula Chaparral) led Colorado on four touchdown drives and the Buffaloes handed coach Jon Embree his first victory, over rival Colorado State. The Buffaloes (1-2) overcame a slow start and a rash of penalties to beat the Rams (2-1) for the fourth straight time in Denver. The Rams were playing without two of their top defenders. Standout senior linebacker Mychal Sisson broke his right ankle last week and watched on crutches from the sideline with pass-rusher Broderick Sargent, who tore an ACL in CSU's opener. The bevy of backups helped stifle the Buffs until they got their ground game going behind Rodney Stewart, who rushed 19 times for 98 yards to go with seven catches for 93 yards and two punt returns for 9 more.

TEXAS TECH 59, NEW MEXICO 13

At Albuquerque, N.M.: Seth Doege threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns to lead Texas Tech (2-0) to a victory against New Mexico (0-3). Doege tied a school record by completing his first 15 passes en route to finishing 40 for 44 - a 90.9 completion percentage, a national record for quarterbacks with at least 40 completions. Darrin Moore caught nine passes for 118 yards and three touchdowns for the Red Raiders. Eric Ward had two TD receptions.
