ORCUTT - Tony Gonzales was in the backyard of his Old Orcutt home with his two kids Monday afternoon when he spotted the mountain lion.

"Just beyond this tree here, in that clearing, it was in the wide open there", Gonzales says pointing to the location from his backyard.

Gonzales says he's certain he was staring at the big cat and called 911.

"When it gets too close to the city, to where kids are playing, that makes it a little more dangerous", Gonzales says.

California State Fish and Game warden Jaime Dostal says its been about 20 years since a mountain lion attacked a human in Santa Barbara County.

"Normally their main prey is going to be deer", Dostal says.

Dostal says mountain lions can roam for more than 100 miles, mostly at night, and can find their way into open space corridors like the one along Orcutt Creek.

"They could possibly stay here for a number of days and go back", Dostal says about the mountain lion's movements, "or if they get trapped in here they could try and live here as long as they can."

"I've see coyotes down there, a lot of wildlife, deer and things like that", says attorney Susan Dunn who has a birds-eye view of the open space from her office perched right above, "I'd be very surprised if they ever came up and onto the streets."

Tony Gonzales says he and his kids will be watching to see if the big cat shows up again.

"Its just part of living out in the country", Gonzales says, "you get used to seeing snakes, and bobcats and I guess mountain lions."
