For the first time, Pensacola Beach will have a Relay for Life event in the spring.

Organizers are hosting a Pensacola Beach Relay for Life team kickoff celebration from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at Margaritaville Beach Hotel's LandShark Landing.

The Rev. Chuck Randle, who recently retired as pastor of Pensacola Beach Community Church, was recruited by the American Cancer Society to be the beach Relay's chairman.

"My mother died when she was about 45 or 46 from cancer," he said. "I understand what that's all about. This is my way of trying to help out and make the community aware of cancer and what we can do to help turn it around."

The Beach Relay group has set a goal to raise $35,000. So far, two teams have singed up: Sidelines and Pensacola Beach Community Church.

Randle said anyone interested in forming a team, joining a team, or just supporting the effort, is invited to attend the kick-off party.

The beach Relay for Life is scheduled for April 13–14 at the Gulfside Pavilion. The teams will walk in the grassy area around the pavilion at Casino Beach.

The team kick-off party will provide information about how to join or help. And the party will feature food, fun and prizes, spokeswoman Courtney Lawson said.

Relay for Life is meant to be a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease, she said..

Relay events consists of teams of people camping out at high schools or parks and taking turns walking or running around a track or path.

Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length in recognition that "cancer never sleeps." Relayers do not have to walk all night, but each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.
