A Missouri man who died while hiking with a friend in South Mountain Park on Sunday was most likely lost, authorities said Monday.
The 31-year-old man and his friend were in town for the Arizona State University-University of Missouri football game on Friday. On Sunday morning, they hiked in South Mountain Preserve.
The friends took some water with them and a map but became lost in the 16,000-square-acre park, said Scott Walker of the Phoenix Fire Department.
Walker said that the pair ran out of water about 11 a.m. The hikers became disoriented, and the man who died appeared to be suffering the effects of heat stroke.
When an emergency call came in at 12:40 p.m., they were far back in the mountains.
The first man was dead by the time rescuers arrived. The other man survived.
Police have not released the names of either man.
