Point Beach's Feerst, RBC's Napolitano highlight Thompson Park Class Meet - The Star-Ledger - NJ.com (blog)
Posted on Saturday, September 17, 2011 by destination tips travel
First awesome weather day of the cross-country season, at least here in NJ (Colts Neck coach Jim Schlentz said it poured on his troops in Williamsburg, Va., today) and meet director Marty Holleran was one of the fortunate fellows to stage a meet today.
The Thompson Park Class Meet offered some familiar faces and some new ones as well. It was nice to see a trio of Shore girls return to the winner's circle at Thompson for this meet: Brianna Feerst of Point Pleasant Beach, Lennon Cooper of Holmdel and Anne Skimmons of Point Pleasant Boro.
Feerst, the junior winner last season, won the senior race today in 19:03, No. 1 among all girls running and just a few ticks off the pace she set when she was a sectional champion here last fall.
Feerst has her sights set on another sectional title and a Group 1 title as well later this fall. She geared up for those goals by getting her summer mileage up to about 50-55 miles per week, and by attending the Notre Dame XC camp in the hottest part of the summer.
The senior boys winner was Old Bridge's Joe Capolino, who charged across in 16:51. Joe split 5:27 and 10:54 before leaving the pack behind. He says he is going 16:40 at Holmdel Park and wants to be a top 10 finisher this season.
Cooper, the sophomore girls winner here last fall, won the junior race in 19:28. Coop swears by the Bennett Running Camp, which she has attended for the last two summers. She swears camp director Chris Bennett, assistant coach at CBA, and his staff have improved her form by leaps and bounds.
Rob Napolitano of RBC won the junior race with a 16:46, the fastest boys time of the day. With a 1:55 and a 4:18 in track, it was hardly a surprise to see Napolitano pull away late with a super kick. His goals are to win the Monmouth County title and run fast at Holmdel to the tune of 16:15.
The sophomore girls winner was Skimmons, the freshman winner here last season. Skimmons prevailed in 19:51.
Anne was telling me about her brutal training schedule after the race. Apparently, she had a 3,00-yard swimming training session yesterday, which I know isn't a big deal to competitive swimmers but it still sounds demanding to us Average Joes. She said the combination of training for XC and swimming keeps her balanced and also keeps her from getting in a training rut with one sport or the other. Makes sense.
Freehold Township's Dylan Tarpey won the sophomore boys race in 16:49, no. 2 among the boys today. Tarpey was Freehold's No. 5 man last year as a freshman when the team placed second at the Central Jersey, Group 4 meet at Thompson. I have a feeling you can look for big things from Tarpey this fall.
The boys freshman winner was Ryan Fischer of Robbinsville, who covered the 2.5-mile course in 14:02. Here's where the day got a little weird.
I was interviewing Ryan when Fischer's TWIN brother, Michael, came up to us and said ``You want to talk to me? I won.'' For maybe a split second, he had me. And just before I noticed the CHAMPION shirt in Ryan's hand, Ryan backed his brother off, saying, ``Don't try and fool him. He's a reporter from the Ledger. He sees everything.''
Now there's a young man who has my back. And shame on you, Michael, for trying to pull a switcheroo. Here's the deal, Mike. With four kids at home, my brain is like mush almost every day. It's easy to fool me, so don't take advantage of an old man. Please.
Will and Ryan are my 5-year-old twin boys at home. Is this what I have to look forward to? They are already a couple of wiseacres.
My apologies to the freshman class girls at the meet today. Due to computer error, I did not have access to the complete results, and they will not be seen in the paper. Marin Warner of Holmdel came away as the individual medalist in 14:53.
