Virginia Beach, VA (Sports Network) - Three-time champion Ellen Port is closer to making history at the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship after capturing two more matches.

Port, who turned 50 on Wednesday, defeated former runner-up Mina Hardin, 3 & 2, in the third round before routing stroke-play medalist Brenda Pictor, 7 & 5, in the quarterfinals at Bayville Golf Club.

The St. Louis native is trying to become the first player to win the Women's Mid-Am four times and will face Helene Beat in the semifinals on Thursday.

Port won back-to-back championships in 1995-96 and earned her third title in 2000. She finished runner-up in 2002 and currently shares the record for most titles with Sarah LeBrun Ingram and Meghan Bolger Stasi.

Because of bad weather during the stroke play rounds, the semifinals and final will both take place Thursday.

Beat advanced with a 2 & 1 win over Sharon Park in the third round and a 1-up victory over former runner-up Thuhashini Selvaratnam in the quarterfinals.

Martha Leach, the 2009 champion, also advanced to the semis with a 5 & 4 win over Patricia Cornett and a 3 & 2 victory over Robin Burke. She will face Tara Joy-Connelly, who earned a 2-up win over Andrea Kraus and a 1-up victory over 1998 champion Virginia Grimes.
