VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - More than fifteen-thousand runners laced up their shoes at the Virginia Beach oceanfront this weekend for the eleventh annual Rock 'N Roll Half marathon.

The sun, the goal, the accomplishment at the end. And yes, that adrenaline...all lined up Sunday morning for the start of the 11th annual Virginia Beach Rock N Roll half marathon.

"We've got elite athletes here. We've got serious runners...You've got people what are raising money for charities whose hearts are really into it. That's a beautiful thing to see."

Of course the music motivates these runners...as does for some; the will to win!

But for others, there is something more. Ryan Carroll, was the top local finisher last year...but this year he ran with Alana Cotton as a member of "Team Hoyt," a national charity that raises money and awareness for disabled children.

"Alana the last few miles, was cheering and that kept me goin. I was starting to cramp up but she'd cheer and I'd find another gear to go to," says Ryan Carroll.

Another gear, another rock n' roll mile run: and for one elite runner: now, a new purpose:

"My Best one yet...and I think I've found my calling for rock and roll, now every year. "

The overal winner was a Kenyon runner named Benson Barus - he finished in one hour and two minutes.

Virginia Beach is one of 19 cities to host the half marathon.
