MANCHESTER First place Signal Mountain girls and second place Notre Dame boys are carrying the Chattanooga prep golf banner high after day one of the TSSAA A-AA state golf championship here Tuesday at Willowbrook Golf Club. Players will tee off Wednesday morning in the final round.

The high-flying Lady Eagles (159) lead Christian Academy of Knoxville (168) by nine strokes, while Boyd Buchanan is in sixth (182) place in the eight-team field.

On the boys side, Alcoa (305) is led by defending state champ Grant Daugherty (69) and holds a one-shot lead over Notre Dame (306) with David Lipscomb (310) in third, five strokes back. East Hamilton (330) is in sixth in the eight-team field.

Girls A-AA: Two-time defending state champ Signal Mountain (159) is in first place with a nine-stroke lead over second place Christian Academy of Knoxville (168) as Eagles Sarah Dolmovich (76) and Hayley Davidson (83) lead the way.

CAK is led by 2010 state individual champ Sophia Schubert who shot a 41-40-81, while teammate Emery Ward shot a 43-44=87.

We are pleased to be in the lead, but we cannot relax and have work to do tomorrow, said Signal Mountain coach Rodney Mitchell.

Three-Peat: Signal Mountain goes for its third straight championship with the last A-AA girls team to post a three-peat was Davidson Academy (2002-03-04) Davidson Academy won nine A-AA titles between before moving to D-II A and winning that division in 2007.

Story Line For Wednesday: Can a repeat performance from 2010 (70-75=140) by state champ Sophia Schubert be good enough to overtake Signal Mountain or is the duo of Sarah Dolmovich and Hayley Davidson too much.

Boys A-AA: Alcoa (305) seeks its first golf crown and leads 2010 state runner-up Notre Dame (306) by one stroke and 2007 champ David Lipscomb (310) by five in the eight-team field.

Alcoas Grant Daugherty (69) has a two-stroke lead over three players Peyton Deming (Christ Presbyterian), Bryce Kendrick (Knox. Grace), Elliott Taliaferro (Greeneville) with Dowling Armstrong (David Lipscomb) and Cameron Duggar (Happy Valley) three strokes back at 72.

Daughertys teammate Matthew Giles is in sixth with a 73, while David Weeks (Notre Dame) is in seventh with a 74.

Boys History: Notre Dame and David Lipscomb have claimed one golf team title each (ND in 1985, the Lions in 2007) and the Lions have had one individual champ in Mike Findley (1997).

The Irish have yet to have an individual winner, but have had a runner-up in Donnie Nichol from that 1985 state championship team.

Alcoa has had three individual winners Daugherty (2010), Ryo Fukami (1995), Virgil Prater (1957) and but no golf team crown.

Of course we would like to be in the lead after day one, but to be in the hunt and not to play our best golf is encouraging, said Notre Dame coach Jeff Fisher. You cant win a state championship on day one, but you sure can lose it and we are right there with 18 holes to play.

The Irish are led by David Weeks (74), Will Armor (75), Kyle Holley (77) and Alexander Riddle (80) and Patrick Armor (82).

Wednesdays Story Line: will Alcoas Grant Daugherty stay hot, win his second individual championship and give the Tornadoes the team crown and can teammate Ryan Mohr shave a few strokes of his opening day 85
will the Armstrong brothers from Lipscomb all shoot in the 70s and make a run at Alcoa and Notre Dame will the Irish post four scores in the mid-70s and see if that is enough.
