SMITHVILLE LAKE | KCK man drowns at beach

A 22-year-old man drowned Sunday at the Smithville Lake Camp Branch beach.

The victim was identified as Julio Cesar Mendoza of Kansas City, Kan.

Investigators with the Missouri State Water Patrol were called to the beach about 10 a.m. after a swimmer went underwater in the cove and did not resurface.

Emergency crews found Mendoza's body a short time later.

KANSAS CITY | Apartment fire displaces 14

Fourteen people, including four children, were displaced when fire broke out about 7 a.m. Sunday at a Kansas City apartment building.

One person was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, said Battalion Chief Joe Vitale, a spokesman for the Fire Department. Firefighters used a ladder to rescue two other people from a second-story balcony.

The cause of the fire at 5107 Thompson Ave. was undetermined, Vitale said. It started on the first floor and caused an estimated $75,000 in damage.

KANSAS CITY | Charge filed in New Year's home invasion

Jackson County authorities on Sunday charged a 28-year-old man in a residential robbery that occurred on New Year's Day.

Daniel McCutchen of Kansas City was charged with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action. Prosecutors recommended that bond be set at $250,000.

According to court records, McCutchen robbed people in the 2900 block of 61st Street. Victims told police that he and others entered the home, brandished guns and stole jewelry, a video game and other items.

During the robbery, a 9-year-old boy tried to intervene and McCutchen allegedly struck him in the head with a handgun, according to court records.

KANSAS CITY | Man treated for gunshot wound

Kansas City police are investigating a shooting early Sunday at Front Street and Riverfront Road.

Police received a report that a man was shot about 2:30 a.m. and was taken to a hospital for surgery.

The shooting appeared not to be life-threatening, police said.

JOHNSON COUNTY | Woman shot in neck

A woman was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck after an argument Saturday in an Edgerton home.

The Johnson County sheriff's office said two women were arguing about 6 p.m. when the shooting occurred. One was taken into custody for questioning. Nobody else was in the house at the time.

The victim's injury did not appear to be life-threatening.

KANSAS CITY | 11 DUI arrests at checkpoint

Kansas City police made 11 DUI arrests at a sobriety checkpoint late Saturday and early Sunday at 40th and Main streets.

Police stopped 540 vehicles. Five motorists were cited for hazardous-moving violations. One person was cited for having a firearm while intoxicated. Another person was cited for driving while having a suspended or revoked license.

Officers issued six other citations for various traffic violations.
