MADEIRA BEACH | Two buildings were damaged early today by winds from a squall line that brought heavy rain and lightning to the region, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Nobody was injured.

The roof of the Holiday Isles, 14711 Gulf Boulevard, was completely torn off in the high winds that whipped through just after 1 a.m., according to deputies. The condominium's roof then struck an adjacent building, the Palms of Madeira Beach, which was partially damaged, according to Bay News 9.

Sixteen people were in the Holiday Isles and 12 were in Palms of Madeira Beach when the high winds came through, deputies said.

The Red Cross was on scene helping people displaced by the damage.

Winds were estimated about 30 to 35 miles per hour, said Todd Barron, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Ruskin. He said there have been no reports of severe winds or tornados.

Emergency managers told the National Weather Service that age and deterioration of the structure likely played a role in the damage, Barron said.

The winds were part of a system of thunderstorms that brought large amounts of rain, lightning and gusty winds to the Bay area, said Bay News 9 Meteorologist Juli Marquez. The storm dumped at least two inches of rain.

The storms began about 11 p.m. after a cold-front moved over the region.

"That boundary is basically setting up over our area," Marquez said.

The rain was still in the area this morning, but the strongest winds and thunderstorms had subsided, she said.

Thunderstorms brought rain to Polk County early today. There are no reports of major damage anywhere.
