VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - Hundreds of thousands of children across Hampton Roads head back to school Tuesday morning.

Now that kids are starting their first day of school, it's important to pay attention to the school zone signs. When flashing, you have to slow your speed to 25 miles per hour.

It's also important to not drive with distractions.

As for school buses, slow down and prepare to stop when you see yellow flashing lights on a school bus, because that means it's getting ready to stop to load or unload children.

When you see red flashing lights on the bus and an extended stop arm, all traffic must stop in each direction unless a physical barrier or unpaved median separates traffic going in either direction.

Another important safety tip now that school has started is not to rush on the road.

Give yourself extra time to get to where you're going since buses are on the roads and kids are walking or riding their bikes to school.

Pedestrians always have the right of way.
