NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Two presidential candidates visited the Grand Strand looking to win over voters to help them win South Carolina. Herman Cain and Rick Santorum were both vying for handshakes from voters to help them win the primary elections of 2012.

Cain attended a meet and greet breakfast at Docksiders in North Myrtle Beach, and Santorum attended a prayer meeting at the Lakeside Conference Center in North Myrtle Beach. They both realize the importance of the Grand Strands votes. Cain said, "I'm going to continue to do these kinds of events that I did here today and that is go and talk to the people directly."

Santorum said, "Most candidates haven't been to South Carolina five times and I've been to Horry County five times, and I just came from Spartanburg so you don't make it easy some times because this is a little corner of the state, but it's not a little corner of the state anymore."

A major topic on both candidates minds is the economy, and they have different ideas about how to fix it. Cain said, "People are picking up on my 9,9,9 plan because it's resonating because it's simple, fair and it eliminates a lot of the debate in Washington DC about loopholes."

Cain's 999 plan would include a phase one which would reduce individual and business income taxes to a maximum 25%. It calls for an end to the payroll tax completely and ends the death tax. It would also create a national sales tax at 9%. Phase two would educate the American people on what Cain calls the fair tax, which would ultimately replace individual and corporate income taxes. It would make it possible to end the IRS as we know it.

On the other hand, Santorum said it is important to establish more manufacturing jobs here in the United States. Santorum said, "That's why I've made the focus of my economic plan to revitalize the manufacturing sector of this economy so I've come up with a five point plan that does that."

Cain and Santorum, both running on different platforms are striving for the same goal of becoming Commander and Chief. Cain said, "I'm the only non-politician in the group and that means I'm the problem solver with over 40 years of business experience." Santorum said, "I'm the authentic conservative in the race, someone who doesn't just check the boxes but has shown I have the courage to lead on the issues."

People along the Grand Strand say it makes a big impact when candidates come here to the beach. Anita Lampley of Murrells Inlet said, "I want to look them in the eyes. I want to hear them speak because you can tell a lot about a person, whether they are coming across as sincere or whether they really mean what they say."
