Two 10th Mountain Division Soldiers stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, were killed in Wardak province, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device.

Friday September 23, Sergeant Rafael E. Bigai Baez, 28, of San Juan, Puerto Rico, lost his life.

Sergeant Bigai Baez was an infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division.  He joined the Army in October 2003, then arrived at Fort Polk in June, 2010, deploying to Kuwait from December 2004 to December 2005. He then deployed to Afghanistan with his unit in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in October 2010.

Sergeant Bigai Baez's awards and decorations include:

  • three Army Achievement Medals
  • Army Good Conduct Medal
  • Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal
  • National Defense Service Medal Afghanistan Campaign Medal

He completed the Warrior Leadership Course and the Combatives Level 1 course.

Sergeant Bigai Baez is survived by his two children, his mother and father.

Also killed was Private First Class Carlos A. Aparicio,19, of San Bernardino, California.

PFC Aparicio was an infantryman with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He joined the Army in June 2010, and after training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he arrived at Fort Polk in January, 2011.  He then deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in February 2011.
