A whale has beached itself on New Smyrna Beach.

The animal was first reported to be a dolphin when it beached itself about 11:40 p.m., but turned out to be a 10-foot-long whale, said Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris. The type of whale is unknown, she said.

The county's Live Marine Mammal Stranding Team is with the whale, using umbrellas to shield it from the sun and keeping it moist, Marris said.

A team from the Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute is en route to help the whale.
