Santa Monica police were looking Monday for witnesses to a Sept. 4 assault and robbery that left a homeless man critically injured and hospitalized.

The attack took place just before 9 p.m. Sept. 4 on the beach where Ocean Park Boulevard ends, between the bike bath and public restrooms, Santa Monica police detectives said, adding that the attack is believed to have been witnessed by several people.

When police arrived, a man was lying on the ground unconscious and bleeding profusely. Police were told the attacker stood over the man and removed property before fleeing.

The victim, who was not identified, was taken in critical condition to a hospital, where he still remains, police said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Dan Larios at (310) 458-8937, Sgt. Ira Rutan at (310) 458-8959 or the Santa Monica Police Department at (310) 458-8495.
