Beach Boys announce release details of lost album Smile - The Guardian

The Beach Boys have announced release details for their lost masterpiece, Smile. After 44 years as a secret passed between fans, three of the band's surviving members have collaborated on "an approximation of what was intended to be the completed" album, according to a press release. And if you spend enough, it comes with a surfboard.

The Smile Sessions will be released by Capitol/EMI on 31 October, available digitally and in a variety of physical manifestations – dual CD, double vinyl, or in box sets including 7in singles, shadow-boxes, signed lithographs and even a custom-made Hobie longboard. Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and Mike Love have worked with engineers to polish off the Beach Boys' original session masters, which were aborted when the group began work on 1967's Smiley Smile.

Besides Smile itself, the Beach Boys are issuing four albums of bonus material, including demos, alternate mixes and studio chatter. There is also a 60-page hardbound book, including essays by Wilson, Love, Jardine and Bruce Johnston, who joined the Beach Boys in the lead-up to Smile.

Seeing as this is 2011, the Beach Boys are also, er, crowdsourcing. The sexagenarian band has launched an online contest asking fans to contribute 250-character video concepts, based on which they will shoot clips for Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villains. The sweepstakes closes on 15 September.

Retired surgeon becomes oldest person to swim the Channel - The Guardian

A 70-year-old grandfather who achieved his ambition of becoming the oldest person to swim the Channel said he had no plans to stage a repeat.

Retired breast cancer surgeon Roger Allsopp entered the record books after swimming from Dover to northern France in 17 hours and 51 minutes.

Wearing a pink swimming hat, he claimed the new Guinness World Record in the early hours of Wednesday morning, exhausted by the distance of 21 nautical miles.

At 70 years and four months, Allsopp beat the record set in August 2004 by George Brunstad, the uncle of the Hollywood star Matt Damon.

Retired airline captain Brunstad, from Connecticut in the US, swam the Channel aged 70 years and four days in a time of 15 hours and 59 minutes.

As he recovered from his ordeal in Dover and toasted his record, Allsopp, from Guernsey, said: "I feel really, really good about it. "The alternative to fail would have been very sad. It was very hard work and I had to work all the way." He added: "My body has told me not do anything like this again."

Allsopp said his first craving after arriving on dry land was a glass of lemonade and he was now looking forward to plenty of rest.

On seeing France come into view, he said: "I thought it was a long way away and the last bit was particularly hard.

"I remember treading on sand but I don't remember anything after that until about halfway home on the boat."

He added that the most difficult part of the challenge was waiting around as changeable weather patterns forced postponements over several days.

The grandfather-of-three was initially inspired to take part in the challenge by an inscription at a pub in Dover marking Brunstad's cross-Channel achievement.

Allsopp's successful attempt came 136 years after British merchant navy captain Matthew Webb became the first person to swim the Channel, doing the breaststroke from Dover to Cap Gris Nez in 21 hours and 45 minutes.

Irene's Aftermath Makes Labor Day Travel Forecast Uncertain - NJ TODAY

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

HAMILTON – Every year, AAA Mid-Atlantic makes projections about how many New Jersey residents will travel during the major holiday periods. Before Hurricane Irene made a mad dash for the beaches along the East Coast, AAA Mid-Atlantic was expecting more than 950,000 New Jersey residents to travel 50 miles or more from home for the 2011 Labor Day holiday weekend. In the aftermath of the storm, it remains to be seen how many folks will venture to shore areas that were evacuated just days ago.

"Now that we have said goodbye to Irene, more than 65 million residents, emergency responders and officials in the storm's track along the East Coast are evaluating the damage left behind by the storm," said Tracy E. Noble, spokesperson for AAA Mid-Atlantic. "Whether New Jersey residents keep their travel plans or not will depend upon how well they fared during the storm."

Even before the hurricane, travel was expected to be down from last year. In New Jersey, 962,000 were expected to travel, a three percent drop from 2010. Nationally, travel was predicted to decline 2.4 percent to 31.5 million. Just under 89,000 were expected to fly, a 2.4 percent decline from last year.

"Prior to Hurricane Irene the largest variable in determining Labor Day Holiday travel was economic uncertainty. Now, the variable has shifted to the level of damage that Irene left in her wake," Noble stated. "It remains to be seen if people will return to the shore area for one last weekend of fun and relaxation or remain closer to home deal with damage and devastation."

The 2011 Labor Day holiday travel period is defined as Thursday, Sept. 1 to Monday, Sept. 5.

Spanish Mountain Announces Commencement of Pre-Feasibility Study - MarketWatch (press release)

VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, Aug 31, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- Spanish Mountain Gold Ltd. (the "Company") /quotes/zigman/582466 CA:SPA +6.15% is pleased to announce the commencement of a Pre-Feasibility Study ("PFS") for the Spanish Mountain Gold Project (the "Project"). The PFS will refine the estimates of capital and operating costs that were the basis for the Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) completed by the Company in December 2010. The Company currently has ongoing resource definition, geotechnical, metallurgical and power supply studies underway, the results of which will form part of the PFS. The PFS will also examine the optimal mill throughput at the beginning of potential commercial production from the Project. The Company is now considering a smaller milling capacity of 25,000 tonnes per day to reduce capital expenditures and to exploit higher-grade, near surface resources for the first 3 years of production with an expansion to 40,000 tonnes per day for the remaining mine life. The PEA was based on a 40,000 tonnes per day capacity for the entire mine life.

The Company has retained Wardrop, A Tetra Tech Company ("Tetra Tech"), as Project Manager, to develop a National Instrument 43-101 compliant PFS. Tetra Tech will work with the following consultants for the PFS:

Knight Piesold Consulting -Tailings design, waste water management, infrastructure geotechnical studies and environmental baseline studies BGC Engineering Inc. -Geotechnical data review for the design of the open pit Moose Mountain Technical -Open pit optimization Services Giroux Consultants Ltd. -Resource estimates SRK Consulting -Acid Rock Drainage studies Stantec -Power Supply

Subsequent to the PEA, the Company has completed in excess of 18,000 metres of infill drilling in both the Main and North Zones. The results from this drilling will be incorporated in an updated resource model.

Extensive metallurgical testwork has already been completed by G&T Metallurgical and SGS Lakefield and a flowsheet for the recovery of gold from the deposit has been developed for the PFS.

The PFS is expected to be completed over a period of approximately six months. The Company may elect to initiate a feasibility study ("FS") during this six month period without prior completion of the PFS. The FS is expected to take approximately one year from the date on which the FS begins.

The Company recently announced that the Project has now entered the 'Pre-Application' phase of the Environmental Assessment and Permitting process with acceptance by both the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency of the Project Description for the Project. The Company signed a Protocol Agreement with the Williams Lake Indian Band in March, 2011 and continues to work collaboratively with other First Nations and communities.

Each review is given an average score indicating where the company places between one and five. All assessments are derived from 2010-2011 employee generated reviews. For the purpose of this data -- more than 96,000 data points were assessed, including company reviews and salaries to determine the top ten happiest hotels.

Matt Miller, CTO and Co-founder of CareerBliss, says, "It is easy to see which hotels excel across the board in employee happiness. Our data reveals that Hyatt Hotel Corporation employees feel very positive about the company's senior management, and the growth opportunities available to them, whereas Marriott International employees ranked higher in recommending the hotel to others. There is a clear sense that senior management, career advancement and work-life balance are strong determining factors in employee happiness."

Falcons travel to Idaho for first game of season - BG News

For the first time since the Humanitarian Bowl in 2009, the Falcons will square up against the Idaho Vandals in the team's season opener on Thursday, Sept. 1.

Head coach Dave Clawson said he was excited and ready to start the season.

"We have had a very productive eight months, from the off-season program to spring football, the players came to camp in great shape," Clawson said. "Our strength numbers and speed numbers were way up, this is a group that came out to work every day we have a very motivated football team right now."

While the two-point conversion that ended the bowl game in favor of the Vandals in 2009 still lingers through the minds of players, defensive tackle Chris Jones said he is not going to use that as motivation.

"The motivation we have is to have a great season," Jones said. "Were coming in here with the folks who want to win the MAC championship ... we're just trying to beat them."

Facing Idaho on the road presents challenges for the Falcons that they don't often face, such as the long travel and playing in a dome instead of outside.

Newly-named quarterback Matt Schilz said it's just another game for them and they are ready to play.

The Kibbie Dome is unique in its make and presents a different set up compared to what players are used to, Clawson said. It will be a good test for the players to play in a hostile environment, he said, and an experience worth having.

"When it's all said and done, the field will still be 120 yards and 53 across and it's the same dimensions we play on every day," Clawson said.

Although Schilz is set to take the first snap in the game against Idaho, Clawson said it wasn't an easy decision.

"At the end of the day, you can compare all the numbers and the stats, and in the end it comes down to a gut feeling over who gives your football team the best chance to win," he said.

Although 81 of the 106 players are freshmen or sophomores, the Falcons are bringing back more depth to multiple positions.

BG has returning starters and experienced players on the offensive and defensive lines, the receivers and the linebacker position.

"A lot of our problem last year is that we didn't have developed depth and when the injuries hit we fell off a cliff," Clawson said. "When you have over 80 scholarship players you have better internal competition, better practices, and better depth going into a season."

Schilz said the O-line has meshed well together and is working harder than ever, along with the receivers.

"[The receivers] definitely have the most depth on the team; I think those guys really push each other on the field and in the weight room," Schilz said. "Don't know who is going to start, but everyone going in will be ready to go."

They will have some challenges to overcome against Idaho, Clawson said.

The Vandals coach is in his fifth season and Clawson said he has made some major improvements to the program.

"They're a team that will try to pound you and run the football," Clawson said. "[They] test you deep and see if you can make plays."

The Falcons have a lot to prove because they were disappointed with how they played last year, Clawson said.

"From what I've seen, we've worked hard; our practice intensity is the best it has been since I've been here," Clawson said.

BG will not be picking season captains for 2011; they will select players prior to each game.

Clawson's picks for the season's opener feature Zach Akenberger, Ben Bojicic, Steven Dunlap and Chris Jones.

Jones is looking to take it one game at a time, come out with a win, and establish confidence right away.

"If we are able to run the ball well, we are going to be able to pass the ball well," Schilz said.

Recorder spent more on travel than elected colleagues - Bloomington Pantagraph

BLOOMINGTON — A review of travel records for McLean County's elected officials by the county auditor confirms that Recorder Lee Newcom has spent more annually on travel than his colleagues.

County Auditor Michelle Anderson released three additional travel reports Wednesday to The Pantagraph that detail the cost and extent of officials' travel.

The auditor's comparison comes in the wake of a controversy over how Newcom books travel and his use of the county credit card. The auditor's office took away Newcom's card three times for violating county policy by purchasing hotel rooms on discount Internet sites Priceline and Hotwire.

He also put an airline ticket for his daughter on the card several years ago. He promptly repaid the cost, but the personal expense violated county policy.

Anderson said her report "shows Mr. Newcom is the only one who is routinely breaking the travel policy and it shows he travels more than his colleagues."

The review of travel by all eight countywide elected officials shows that Newcom's annualized travel costs since he took office in 2004 amount to $4,333 for both in- and out-of-state travel. The smallest expense for travel comes from County Clerk Don Everhart, who has spent $593 per year on average since 2008.

Newcom declined an offer by The Pantagraph for a copy of the auditor's breakdown of travel expenses.

"I don't care to see it or comment on it," said Newcom, calling the report "a stupid, meaningless comparison."

Newcom maintains that he did not intend to offer public comment on other officials when he previously asked Anderson for copies of their travel records.

In an email to officials last month, he said he would review the materials privately to determine the truth of Anderson's claim that he traveled more than others and his own assertion that he saved the county money by using discount sites.

"This is not an attempt to engage in any 'gotcha' type of activity," Newcom told other officials in the email message.

Starting Aug. 23 with Sheriff Mike Emery, all seven elected officials released their own reports.

Newcom said his travel is necessary to obtain information for his office, information that he said has resulted in many upgrades in technology and efficiency.

"This is an office no one understands. I took one of the worst, most abused county recorder's offices in the state to what is probably one of the best," said Newcom.

Travel costs

Following is a comparison of how much each of the following countywide elected officials has spent per year on travel.

Official...Cost/year

Recorder Lee Newcom...$4,333.17

State's Attorney Bill Yoder...$3,570.35

Auditor Michelle Anderson...$3,132.12

County Clerk Kathy Michael...$2,301.75

Treasurer Rebecca McNeil...$1,934.47

Sheriff Mike Emery...$1,227.20

Coroner Beth Kimmerling...$646.82

Circuit Clerk Don Everhart...$593.02

Methodology notes

-- The total each spent between the day they took office and Aug. 30, 2011, was divided by the number of years they have been in office. For example, Newcom spent $29,240.01 since taking office on Dec. 1, 2004. Thus the total was divided by 6.747945 years (2,463 days) to yield $4,333.17.

-- Emery and Kimmerling have county vehicles, so some actual travel costs cannot be included and may skew the analysis.

-- The continuing education requirements vary office to office.

Have Apps, Will Travel - Part 2 - TechNewsWorld

The TeamViewer app can remotely connect you to your own desktop to retrieve passport, credit card and other vital information if your wallet is lost or stolen during your travels. In a flash, you have all the account numbers and phone numbers to call to cancel your cards. A backup passport on your desktop and retrieved in TeamViewer can help the U.S. Embassy process a replacement quickly so you can reenter the U.S.

Gain the critical knowledge to lead successful projects and prepare for PMP® or CAPM® certification exams with Villanova University's Project Management program - 100% online dynamic instructor-led online learning. Get started now.

Have Apps, Will Travel - Part 1

No matter how many virtual meeting applications spring up and how popular they may be, travel is still a bit part of corporate life. Fortunately, mobile apps have made the task more tolerable, more efficient and considerably more pleasant. That is, of course, if you're using the best apps for the trip you're planning.

To speed you on your way, help you keep those receipts handy for reimbursement, find the best place to entertain your clients, and even help you find a parking place fast, here's a roundup of apps you may not know about yet but you'll absolutely love to use!

Concierge Apps

There you are stuck in a meeting that's running late and there's no time to use search engines to find a good place to take everyone to dinner. What do you do? Why, you skip the search engines and use a concierge app instead.

Alfred learns what each user likes and provides food and venue recommendations at home or on the go. Alfred takes information from the big data farms and makes connections among places, learns your preferences, and helps you make decisions about what new restaurants, bars, coffee shops and clubs you should try -- without searching.

The idea is to predict what you want and serve it up, like a good concierge, rather than having you search through Yelp listings or sort through reviews.

myBantu is a smart digital assistant that provides Facebook, iPhone and Android mobile users with relevant dining, shopping and entertainment recommendations. Its developers aim to use its Active Relevance platform to permanently shelve traditional a la carte search engines like Yelp, OpenTable, Bing, etc. You don't need to use search terms or key words, just type in what you need like "Nearby movies" or "Two tickets to Harry Potter film" or "Closest good Chinese restaurant."

What to Wear Apps

Not sure what to pack for your trip? Take a quick peek at MyStylist, which can be found on WeareverTheWeather.com. Fill out a simple form on your computer or phone and My Stylist generates the matching weather forecast and corresponding clothing. You can also click the link "What Are They Wearing In" to see photos of what people in that area are wearing. Now you know what to pack -- or what to shop for!

Just wondering whether to pack an umbrella or galoshes? Both the Weatherbug and the Weather Channel apps can keep you updated on weather conditions at home and at your destination.

Receipt Capture and Storage App

Insperity Expense Management has just announced its ExpensAble Mobile app for Droid, BlackBerry and iPhone that helps business travelers download their travel and entertainment expenses in real-time.

The app lets users capture receipt images, add expense details, calculate currency exchange rates, etc. -- everything you need to file your receipts for company reimbursement either online or when you return. Did you know that this app can also help you contain travel and entertainment costs incurred by staffers? Real-time knowledge of expenses can be an important addition to your cost containment toolbox.

Broadband Booster App

If you've traveled outside of the U.S., you know carriers can really hit you on data charges -- up to US$20 per megabyte actually. That's a tough hit considering the average Facebook page load is about 200 KB, which means you'd pay almost $4 every time you wanted to update your status.

That's where Opera Mini comes in handy. Its servers compress the page to about one tenth of the document's original size. This being the case, you should, at least theoretically, get almost 10 times the number of pages for your $20 Internet connection fee. Use it anytime you need to boost Internet speed -- such as on a plane, when the crowded WiFi slows to a crawl, or over tenuous connectivity at a hotel. Opera Mini can make the most of whatever bandwidth you've got.

Did you know you can transfer data even faster on your laptop by bypassing Opera Mini in favor of the regular Opera browser and enabled Turbo? Servers still reduce the size of the page, but by 50-70 percent for Turbo. This can be a life saver when you absolutely need to get online. Like Opera Mini, Opera is also free, so there's no harm in having it on your system, even if you prefer another browser for day-to-day surfing.

Emergency Backup App

The TeamViewer app can remotely connect you to your own desktop to retrieve passport, credit card and other vital information if your wallet is lost or stolen during your travels. In a flash, you have all the account numbers and phone numbers to call to cancel your cards.

A backup passport on your desktop and retrieved in TeamViewer can help the U.S. Embassy process a replacement quickly so you can reenter the U.S. Did you know that the app will also allow you to store new files created on your phone or laptop onto your desktop? That way, if you must wipe a lost or stolen mobile device, your files are still backed up in a safe location.

Car and Parking Apps

How many times have you had to circle the block looking for a parking place while your colleagues or clients were impatiently waiting? Or, drive up and down aisles hoping to find a spot quick enough to still catch your flight? Now there are apps to help you find a spot, park and run!

Parkopedia allows drivers to find the closest parking to their destination, tells them how much it will cost, and whether the space is available now. The app provides detailed information on more than 18 million parking spaces in 25 countries, including parking lots, street parking and private driveways.

Airport Parking Reservations will find the cheapest and most convenient parking at 85 major U.S. and Canadian airports. Find a parking spot fast and avoid a $100-plus ransom fee to get your car out of expensive lots.

MyCar Locator is a free app that remembers where you parked your car or a rental. Push one button and you know instantly where you left the car. To store a parking spot just press the "P" or double-tap on the map. An arrow points you to the car's location when you return, and gives you turn-by-turn navigation back to your parked car. It also remembers how long you have parked if you need to calculate the parking fee.

Prefer to take a taxi instead of hunting a parking space? Taxi Magic is the top taxi booking application. Taxi Magic's GPS capabilities help you book cabs when you're visiting a city and don't have a clue as to your exact location. Plus, you can track the arrival of your taxi, pay the tab with your credit card and expense the trip with an e-receipt. All in all, it's a very helpful app.

Insider Apps

The ExpertFlyer mobile app is used by business travelers and frequent fliers to get inside info on seats that they can snag by using their frequent flier miles. Most of these seats are not visible or communicated to the average traveler when dealing with airline reservations. This app aids travelers in using their reward points to upgrade or fly for free at a time when it's becoming harder and harder to use miles effectively.

The FlightBoard app allows you to check arrival and departure boards at any airport you like while FlightTrack gives you a real-time status check on your flight (while it's in the air too!) so you know about weather delays -- or your ride at the other end of your trip can see you'll be arriving early or late.

Or, you can check out social media activity at LAX before heading to the airport to see if security is a mess or planes are delayed -- and if so, whether you can afford the time for a cup of coffee. By using Banjo, you can tap into social media activity in any given location in real-time.

Just type in your location or simply move the map with your finger tips and drop the pin to mark the location. Assign your location, and press save! Now you know exactly what people (strangers too) in the area are saying about conditions, be that at an airport or an event or on a highway. Think of it as location-pinned social media.

Now you're ready for anything on your trip!

Smokies get bump in visitors from Hurricane Irene - BusinessWeek

The Smoky Mountain tourist area has received an unexpected boost from Hurricane Irene as summer-end travelers move away from the storm-battered coast.

Businesses in the East Tennessee region report an influx of patrons who fled the hurricane last weekend or who are changing Labor Day plans because of damage on the East Coast, particularly in nearby North Carolina and Virginia.

The Wilderness at the Smokies water park and 1,000-room hotel complex in Sevierville has had hundreds of phone calls about availability over the Labor Day weekend because of the hurricane disruption.

"Reservations (department) rang nonstop from people changing plans or trying to," said Rick Laney, a spokesman for the attraction. The venue is booked up for the three-day holiday.

Last Friday, the site booked about 225 rooms from insurance adjusters looking for a central location to depart after the hurricane was over.

Tourism officials in Gatlinburg, a gateway city to the mountains, had an influx of tourists last weekend as the hurricane forecasts were issued. Some of them were East Coast residents trying to escape the weather, said Jim Davis, a spokesman for the city.

"Many of those visitors are staying over this week and we expect another influx of Labor Day vacationers who had their plans altered to come to the Smokies and boost what has traditionally been a very solid final gasp of summer," Davis said.

As of Monday, the city had plenty of rooms and cabins available.

Officials at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, straddling the Tennessee-North Carolina border, said it's hard to tell if business will pick up over the holiday weekend because of the hurricane.

"It's a reasonable alternative, though," spokeswoman Nancy Gray said.

The park has 9.4 million visitors annually, attracted by mountain vistas and the chance to see a black bear. It is the most popular national park.

Leon Downey, a tourism spokesman for Pigeon Forge, Tenn., another town in the Smoky foothills, said the Labor Day weekend usually means brisk business even without outside factors like a hurricane.

"It's usually a busy time for us," he said. "Kids have a long weekend and so do most parents. If the weather is good, normally we do very well on major holidays."

Roan Mountain State Park, the closest state park to North Carolina, is already fully booked for the coming weekend.

Laney, who represents businesses throughout the Smokies area, said the situation resulting from Hurricane Irene reminded some about what happened after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 20xx. The Smokies area got some visitors who normally would have gone to New Orleans or elsewhere.

"But you never like to capitalize on someone else's misfortune," he said.

Five Mile Said to Buy $700 Million in Red Roof Debt to Take Over 143 Inns - Bloomberg

A joint venture led by Five Mile Capital Partners LLC gained control of 143 hotels by acquiring $700 million of Red Roof Inns Inc. debt, according to a person familiar with the transaction.

Five Mile and Westmont Hospitality Group bought the loans on the economy-level hotels on Aug. 25, said Andrew Alexander, president of Columbus, Ohio-based Red Roof Inns. He declined to say how much the partnership paid. The debt was purchased for 50 cents on the dollar, said the person familiar with the deal, who declined to be identified because the transaction's private.

The venture contributed $70 million toward renovations in addition to the purchase price as part of the deal. A partnership led by Dune Real Estate Partners, which bought debt on Red Roof Inns earlier this year and gained control of 51 hotels, provided $20 million for upgrades.

"Both of these transactions were completed as acquisitions at a discount to par value," Alexander said in a telephone interview. He wouldn't say how big the discount was. "That has allowed them to de-lever the assets and move forward with the renovations."

Debra Chun, a spokeswoman for Stamford, Connecticut-based Five Mile, declined to comment on the acquisition. A representative for New York-based Dune and Dorraine Lallani, a spokeswoman for Westmont's U.S. offices in Houston, didn't return calls seeking comment.

The completion of the Red Roof purchases comes as increasing market turmoil and concerns that the U.S. may be close to another recession are putting pressure on hotel transactions. Last week, Cerberus Capital Management LP and Chatham Lodging Trust (CLDT) terminated their $1.1 billion agreement to buy 64 hotels from Innkeepers USA Trust.

Red Roof, which has about 350 hotels in the U.S., "has outperformed the economy segment every month since the beginning of the year," Alexander said. "It's a good sign to investors and potential lenders."

Revenue per available room, a lodging industry measure of occupancy and rate, increased 7.1 percent this year through July at Red Roof, Alexander said. That compares with a 5.8 percent revpar gain for all U.S. economy hotels, according to Smith Travel Research Inc. of Hendersonville, Tennessee.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index has declined 6.1 percent in August as S&P cut its rating on U.S. debt for the first time in history. Citigroup Inc. (C) and JPMorgan Chase & Co. trimmed forecasts for U.S. growth earlier this month, while Morgan Stanley cut its estimate for 2011 global expansion, saying the U.S. and Europe are "dangerously close to recession."

'A Basic Retrenchment'

"For private-equity investors, and more importantly for lenders, there's a basic retrenchment with the thought that maybe we need to step back a little and slow down major acquisitions and see whether the economic forecasts are realistic," David Loeb, a hotel analyst at Milwaukee-based Robert W. Baird & Co., said in an Aug. 22 interview after the termination of the Innkeepers acquisition was announced.

Five Mile also is in talks with Innkeepers, two people with knowledge of the discussions said last week. Five Mile lost to Cerberus in a May auction of the Innkeepers properties.

Red Roof's owners, who included Westmont and Citigroup, had been in talks with creditors since defaulting on about $754 million in loans tied to 127 hotels in 2009, the Wall Street Journal reported in May.

The Red Roof upgrades will involve complete room and lobby renovations, including new carpets, hardwood floors and flat- screen televisions, by the end of next year, Alexander said. The upgrades will start with hotels in such large cities as New York, Boston, Chicago and Miami.

All Red Roof properties in the deals have signed franchise agreements with Red Roof Franchising LLC and will continue to be managed by RRI West Management, a Red Roof Inns affiliate, Alexander said.

Wednesday Beach Report: Another Perfect Day - Patch.com

There's really not much more you can ask for in a beach day.

On Wednesday morning on the beach at North Street, there's not a cloud in bright blue sky -- nor is there a breath of humidity. The air has a bit of a September chill to it in the morning and we're headed for a high temperature of a perfect 80 degrees.

The ocean water is crystal clear, calm and 72 degrees. Pods of dolphins are swimming close to shore. And there are even some nice little waves to keep everybody entertained.

A light north wind is keeping airborne pests at bay. There's nothing to get in the way of soaking up one of the last beach days of summer.

Surf: The ocean is glassy calm in between sets of chest-high waves rolling in on Wednesday morning. A great week of waves continues to diminish slowly, but they're hanging on for another day. Off on the horizon, Tropical Storm Katia is predicted to take an offshore track that could bring a new round of waves next week. High tide is at 9:38 a.m., and low tide is at 3:52 p.m.

Traffic: No issues this morning.

Tom Zirpoli: Exciting rendezvous with Irene - Carroll County Times

One of the first items that disappears from the stores on the day before a hurricane is the size D battery.

Evidently, most flashlights use size D batteries. And in Virginia Beach on the day before hurricane Irene's unwelcomed visit, it appeared that many flashlights were receiving fresh batteries.

Of course, to drive around and shop for a pack of size D batteries you need a car with gasoline. But by Friday morning most of the gas stations in Virginia Beach, where I had driven to be with my mom, were sold out.

Bottled water and other supplies were still available in some grocery stores, but going fast and furious. Many stores closed by early afternoon so that employees could go home and prepare for the storm or just leave town.

Virginia Beach is wedged between the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. If you walk south on the beaches there along the Atlantic Ocean, you will soon cross the state line into North Carolina and the Outer Banks.

The roads leading away from Virginia Beach were busy as tourists and residents moved west and out of Irene's projected path. Virginia Beach and the surrounding area are frequently referred to as Tidewater because the land is almost level with the high tide level of the surrounding ocean and bay. Even a small surge of water from an ordinary Atlantic storm is enough to put much of the area under water. But this was a hurricane heading our way and flooding was anticipated.

By Friday evening most people in Virginia Beach were as ready for the storm as they were going to get. Restaurants were quiet, and the tall skinny pine trees, common in that area and easily broken by a strong gust of wind, began to sway.

Our encounter with Irene came on Saturday. The morning rain and wind were a warm up before hours of hurricane-force winds through the afternoon and into the evening. All you could do was watch and wait and hope for the best.

By early evening, category one winds shook the trees as we watched the waters of the Chesapeake Bay rise with each passing hour. High tide, a time of serious flood concern, was scheduled for 7 p.m.

But falling trees, not flooding, was my primary concern. The ground was already saturated with about six inches of rain, making easy work for the wind to push them over. One particular giant tree behind my mother's house was the focus of that concern. Even with the tree standing back as far as 30 feet from the house, it was tall enough and big enough to take out half the house if it were pushed in the right direction.

By 8 p.m. wind and rain filled the outside. It was dark and we could only listen to the fury of Mother Nature. We lost electricity. The western wall of Irene's eye was now less than 10 miles to our east and we were grateful that this was only a category one hurricane.

When we went to bed Saturday evening we knew the worst was over. The back end of the hurricane would push water away from our shores and reduce the flooding, and the winds would begin to die down during the night.

The drive home to Westminster was an adventure in itself, but by Sunday evening I was home-sweet-home.

My encounter with Irene was brief, at times intense, and a little exciting; just what you might expect when you schedule a meeting with a hurricane.

Tourism dilemma: Irene's gone but summer's not - BusinessWeek

If you fix it, they will come.

That's the mantra -- and the desperate hope -- of tourism-dependent towns along the East Coast as they deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, which hit just eight days before Labor Day.

Places that lost boardwalks, restaurants, roads and other fixtures in the storm are terrified the tourists will simply call it a season and stay away until next summer.

"The key is getting the word out," said Celina Moose, the manager of a kite store in in Kitty Hawk, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. "The beaches are open. The restaurants are open. We need tourists to come back."

But that can prove easier said than done. The Jersey shore, like North Carolina, had Irene make landfall on its sands. And while the land of Snooki and The Situation fared well as a whole, some places did not.

Spring Lake lost much of its beloved synthetic boardwalk, a 2-mile miracle of modern engineering that was hailed as a national model of environmental responsibility because it used recycled plastic instead of rain forest wood as many other boardwalks do. Joggers came from miles around to run along the softer boards, which they swear are much easier on the knees than real wood.

The storm surge from Irene wiped out about 1.5 miles of the boardwalk, sending planks into the sea, while twisting others into grotesque shapes. Clearly, this is damage that can't be fixed in time for Labor Day.

So the town will have to make do with about half its beach, and very little of its boardwalk during one of the three biggest weekends of summer.

"It's going to be nowhere near what we normally have open," said Bryan Dempsey, Spring Lake's borough administrator. "We're trying everything we can, but we're not going to put anyone in danger just to have a beach day."

The beach will open on Tuesday, after officials took a helicopter to fly over the surf to make sure planks of damaged boardwalk were not floating in the waves, ready to injure swimmers.

Ocean City, N.J., is also reopening its beaches on Tuesday. Swimmers returned to the water on Monday, but without lifeguards, who had moved all their rescue equipment offshore in anticipation of the hurricane. The beach resort suffered hardly any damage at all aside from some beach erosion. Now all that remains is convincing people to come for one last summer weekend.

"We're back in business, and looking to finish out what has been a really good summer," said Frank Donato, the city's emergency management coordinator.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie had a fit of pique over seeing people lounging on the beach in Asbury Park as the storm approached, and after he had declared a state of emergency that led to many mandatory evacuations.

"Get the hell off the beach!" he thundered at a news conference.

But now, Christie is singing a different tune: Please get the hell back on the beach.

At a news conference Monday night, he urged people to get in their cars and go to the Jersey shore for the Labor Day weekend, predicting there would be vacancies as a result of Irene.

"Be an opportunist," he said. "You'll probably get a good price."

Elsewhere, it was much the same, as communities dug out from under the sand and looked ahead to the holiday weekend.

Judy Packer was walking her black Labrador retriever near the beach in Nags Head, N.C., part of a vacation she had planned for months. The beach house she was renting came through the storm with barely a scratch.

"If there had been substantial damage, we would have cancelled the family vacation," said Packer, a 44-year-old accountant and mother of three from New York City.

Now she plans to do the usual: Spend most of her days at the beach and going to her favorite restaurants at night.

"I just want to spend the next week unwinding," she said. "I'm just glad there wasn't much storm damage. It's good to be here."

At the Comfort Inn on the beach at Nags Head, the hotel's 105 rooms were booked solid for the week before the storm, said manager Kelly Smith. But over the last 24 hours they received 150 cancellations for the coming week. She estimated that the hotel will only be about two-thirds full over the traditionally busy Labor Day weekend, when rooms go for $160 a night.

Many of the cancellations are coming from northern states affected by Irene.

"They're saying they're cancelling because their power is off and don't know when it's coming on," Smith said. "Or they're saying their power is off, they had some damage and they don't know if they can afford the vacation anymore."

Some resorts away from the ocean actually benefited from Irene. The Smoky Mountain resort city of Gatlinburg, Tenn., reported an influx of tourists last weekend as the hurricane forecasts were issued. Some of them were coastal residents trying to escape the weather, said city spokesman Jim Davis.

Hotels on Block Island, R.I., are slashing prices and trying as hard as they can to get the word out that their area was not affected by the storm.

"Today is absolutely gorgeous," said Kathy Szabo, executive director of the Block Island Chamber of Commerce. "The ferries are running, and I sure hope that people come out. You wouldn't even know that a storm went by."

American extends deal with reservations operator - BusinessWeek

American Airlines says it has extended a deal that will keep its flights listed on reservations systems run by Sabre Holdings Corp., owner of the Travelocity website.

The agreement was scheduled to expire Wednesday. The companies agreed to extend it until after American's antitrust lawsuit against Sabre is over -- probably next year, a spokesman for the airline said Tuesday.

Travel agents could have lost access to American's flights and fares if the deal had expired.

Airlines, travel agents and reservations systems are fighting over control of flight, fare and schedule information. American wants to provide more information directly to travel agents, which could reduce its costs and let it better tailor offerings to customers.

AMR shares rose a penny to $3.55 in afternoon trading.

Choice Hotels Breaks Ground on New Headquarters - Patch.com

City, county and state officials joined representatives of the Foulger-Pratt Companies and Choice Hotels International on Tuesday to break ground for the hotel company's new headquarters in Rockville Town Center.

The company, which franchises more than 6,100 hotels worldwide, signed a lease in July to move its headquarters and its nearly 400 employees from Silver Spring to Rockville when the building's construction is complete in 2013. The company, which is known for such brands as Comfort Inn, Clarion and Econo Lodge, plans to add 75 employees once it moves to Rockville.

Choice Hotels will occupy more than 130,000 square feet of office space in Rockville Metro Plaza II, which is being constructed by Foulger-Pratt. The Rockville-based development company also will own and manage the building at 121 Rockville Pike, at the corner of Middle Lane near Rockville Town Square and the Regal Cinemas.

Plans are also in place to build a Cambria Suites hotel across the street from the headquarters. The hotel, expected to accommodate 10,000 stays per year, will be used for employee and franchisee training and community, vendor and hotel developer gatherings.

The entire Rockville City Council, members of the County Council, County Executive Isiah Leggett (D), Sen. Jennie M. Forehand (D-Dist. 17) of Rockville and U.S. Rep. Christopher Van Hollen Jr. (D-Dist. 8) of Kensington were among those in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony.

Mayor Phyllis Marcuccio was blunt about what Choice Hotels' presence will mean for Rockville: "They're going to pay taxes," she said during formal remarks.

Clayton Foulger, principal for Foulger-Pratt, thanked Marcuccio and the City Council for "their support and substantial political investment in the project," which included $4.3 million in conditional loans and grants contingent upon Choice Hotels adding jobs at the new headquarters.

"Even in these challenging times, these good people saw clearly and made [a] good choice," Foulger said.

The poor economic climate is in Choice Hotels' favor, said company President and CEO Stephen P. Joyce.

"What is a tough economic environment makes for a great opportunity to do something like this," said Joyce, who credited the company's "strong balance sheet," the cheaper cost of construction in a down market and sponsorship from Foulger-Pratt and Wells Fargo.

The move comes after a two-year search for a new headquarters site that included Choice Hotels being wooed by other states.

In the end, the Rockville Metro station across the street and the proximity to  to the restaurants and retail of Rockville Town Square made Town Center an attractive place to be, Joyce said.

"This place just seemed to have it all," he said. "And we found the exact right project with the exact right partners and we couldn't be more pleased with the final decision."

In addition to bringing new tax revenue to the city, Choice Hotels is "a commercial operation, it's a foundation group, it's going to be here a long time," Marcuccio said in an interview after the ceremony.
