Tropical Storm Lee could bring rain to Mountain Empire - TriCities.com
The region may experience some rain from Tropical Storm Lee, currently churning its way through the Gulf of Mexico, but not until the beginning of the week, a meteorologist said Friday.
The center of the tropical circulation – the eye of the storm – isn't projected to hit land until Sunday morning, said Tod Hyslop, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Morristown, Tenn.
"It looks like the models kind of have it lollygagging down there, moving slowly," he said Friday evening. "It's not a real quick mover. It doesn't become a player in our area until probably about Monday."
And Monday evening, at that, he said. He said streams of moisture might move into the region, bringing rain and wind.
"The wind flow will pick up a little bit, but it's nothing for you guys to get excited about," Hyslop said. "It's not gonna bring trees down."
The weather for the rest of the weekend should be pleasant, Hyslop said.
Today is expected to be another "real hot day," with highs in the low 90s. Friday's 95-degree weather tied the record high, set in 1943. Typically, temperatures this time of year are around 83, he said.
Also, Friday was declared an Ozone Action Day, with the air-quality index forecast to reach 101, which just pushed it into the orange zone, indicating that older adults, children and those with respiratory problems may have trouble breathing, according to information gathered by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Today is expected to be back down in the yellow, moderate zone.
Sunday will be a little cooler, in the middle 80s, because there will likely be more cloud cover from the storm as it moves north. There's about a 70 percent chance of rain Sunday, and Monday is expected to be warm, with a 50 percent chance of rain, Hyslop said.
