GOLDEN, Colo. -- Emergency crews were called to a home at 227 Lamb Lane on Lookout Mountain Saturday after a deck collapsed, injuring several people."Lots of people landed on top of each other," said Brett Lewan, one of the victims able to walk away. "I sort of slid down and landed on my feet."Jefferson County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Mark Techmeyer said that an estimated 25 adults fell 18 feet when the deck collapsed.
Twelve people between the ages of 21 and 50 were injured, Techmeyer said. He said 2 people were critically injured and 2 others were in serious condition."There were some people who weren't conscious. There were people, like, complaining and definitely not being able to move," said victim Sam King. "There was a loud crack! But there was nothing before that, like creaking. It didn't feel unstable at any time."Several agencies, including the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Genesee Fire, and Foothills Fire responded to the incident.A building inspector called to the scene told a 7NEWS crew that the deck was "weak" and not up to current building standards.According to records posted on the Jefferson County Assessor's website, the home was built in 1978.King remembered that same wooden sundeck from his childhood friendship with homeowner Britt Hinnen."And it just got old and boom! There it goes. We just had too many people on the deck," King said."So it sloped downwards. And everyone sort of slid off or pretty much, just fell," said Lewan. "There's so much broken wood over there, someone could've easily gotten impaled. It could've been much worse than it was, I think."
