Jalandhar is one of the major cities of the state of Punjab in India. It is well-connected with rail, air, and land transport. It is also known for its two major fairs, Hariballabh Sangeet Mela and the Fair of Baba Sodal. The mela is held in the month of December, for a week, in the memory of the classical musician Swami Hariballabh. It is a platform for classical singers and musicians from different parts of the country who gather to showcase their talent. Moreover, in 1956, a Sangeet Academy under the grace of Hariballabh was formed to promote teaching and research in classical music.
The Fair of Baba Sodal is held once a year in the month of September to commemorate the death anniversary of a small boy named Sodal, who was known as the baby-God. At the boy's Samadhi, women flock together to make offerings in the wee hours of the morning. Later on, the offerings are distributed among all the pilgrims and some of them take a dip in the holy tank of Baba Sodal-Da-Sarowar.
Jalandhar also has a repertoire of literature and art. Punjabi language is the mother tongue of the place. It is one of the biggest centers of regional vernacular press in India. Most of the publications are in Urdu, Punjabi, and Hindi. Many great works on Indo-Pak partition were written from this place.
