As school budgets are cut each year, it is extremely difficult for schools to offer students extracurricular activities and field trips. Providing children with enrichment opportunities during vacation can help supplement their learning. CruiseOne Angela Mattox offers parents tips for enriching children's education through travel.
Middleburg, FL (PRWEB) August 29, 2011
CruiseOne Independent Cruise and Vacation Specialist Angela Mattox is offering tips for parents who are interested in enriching their child's learning during vacations. It is very important for children to make connections between what they are learning in school to real life situations. Vacationing is an excellent time for children to explore new adventures. Here are some tips for parents to consider:
1. Ask teachers what students are learning during a particular term or the year. Most districts have curriculum outlines posted on line. Children may also have communication letters from the school or syllabi explaining the topics for a quarter/term.
2. Once a vacation destination has been chosen, find ways to make connections between what children are learning and the vacation destination. For example, children can learn about the three branches of government during a trip to Washington, DC. They can see the White House (Executive), visit the Supreme Court (Judicial) and tour the US Capitol (Legislative). This is a great way to make learning relevant.
3. Before taking a trip, ask children what they want to learn about the place they are visiting. Narrow it down to one or two things. Don't overwhelm with too much information at one time.
4. Provide children with age appropriate books, videos, and other media to heighten their interest about the specific topic they are focusing on.
5. Start off slow, introduce information in small increments. Encourage children to read information before or after school, if time permits.
6. Have conversations with children about what they are learning. Ask questions and find out how they feel about going. Journaling before, during, and after a trip is a great way to keep track of their discoveries.
7. Make learning fun and interactive. Once they have learned new information about a particular place, ask the children to help choose some activities based on what they are learning. Once the activities are chosen, each child will be an "expert" for their specific activity. It gives children a feeling of ownership.
8. Before the family begins each activity, have the "expert" give a quick two - three minute presentation about the place they are going to visit. Parents should decide the format children should use before the presentation.
9. After the activity, each child can share one new discovery they learned during the activity. They can also discuss whether or not they would recommend the activity to their friends.
10. At the end of the trip, children can evaluate their vacation and create a project based on their vacation experience. They can use their pictures to create movies, photo albums, or presentations. Children can decide how they want to share their experience.
Things to Consider:
- Enhancing children's learning through travel takes a lot planning beforehand, but it can be very rewarding. When children are involved in a vacation's planning, they take ownership and the trip becomes more meaningful.

About Angela Mattox
When Angela Mattox took her sons, 6 and 9, to the Mediterranean this past summer, she enhanced their learning before, during, and after their incredible trip. Her sons read age appropriate books and watched videos before the trip. They learned about the origins of democracy, the history behind the census, Michelangelo and his incredible works, and a host of other topics. They were able to make fascinating connections when they visited the places they learned about. Each day, her sons wrote a journal and took several pictures. After the trip, they made presentations to share their experiences. With proper planning and organization, learning during a vacation can be exciting for children of all ages.
