Resources To Help You Find an Authentic New York Experience
Posted on Wednesday, August 3, 2011 by destination tips travel
Whether you currently live in New York or you're just visiting for awhile, check out these resources to find an authentic and unique New York experience. I utilize these resources regularly on my quest to do a lot of cool stuff.
TimeOut NY magazine: If you live in NYC, then you already know that this is an obvious resource. TONY is the social bible for the city with a bit of a hipster, geek chic feel. It's published weekly, on a Thursday-Wednesday schedule and contains extensive event listings for the five boroughs in art, culture, music, nightlife, theater, shopping and everything in between. The best part is that it lists hundreds of free events each week, so you can go zero in on those if you're on a tight budget.
Gothamist website: A great online source for news and happenings, featuring the good, bad and the ugly of living in NYC. It's updated throughout the day and is refreshing for its humor and candor.
UrbanDaddy mailing list: I subscribe to a number of mailing lists, but this one really stands out because its content always feels fresh and at the forefront of what's innovative and hip (and yes, I know if I'm using the word 'hip,' then I'm probably not). Each day, you receive a couple of e-mails with information about a new venue, event, or thing; toward the end of the week, there's also an e-mail dedicated to top weekend events- everything you need to feel like you're in-the-know, presented in a sassy and luxe style. UrbanDaddy also sends out information about new travel destinations and concepts, and often offers special perks for its subscribers to attend member-only or sold out events.
Groupon deals: By now I'm guessing most people have heard of Groupon since the twenty-something year-old founder is now a billionaire. But in case you haven't, Groupon offers daily deals for activities in the city. If enough people buy into the deal, then the deal takes effect and everyone gets to use the Groupon. Otherwise, your credit card isn't charged. Not only does Groupon offer a nice range of activities and deals, but it's also a great way to try something new at a heavily discounted price. I would recommend, however, that you Yelp the place before you buy because I have found that some businesses opt to offer a Groupon because they're not doing well in the first place (and often there's a darn good reason why).
The 8 million people around you: It's impossible to be in New York and not regularly meet really fascinating people who do amazing things. Consequently, you're constantly finding out about new opportunities or being invited to do incredible things. You just have to recognize and say "yes" to those opportunities when they're presented to you even though it may be tempting to go sit on your couch after a long day. And return the favor when you can, why don'tcha.
