AAA: Fewer travelers overall this Labor Day weekend
With Labor Day weekend under way, it looks like more people will be staying home.
For the first time in 2011, AAA is expecting a decline in travel over a holiday weekend.
Drivers on the Pennsylvania Turnpike described what they saw and learned how they could get around it.
At the Bowmansville Travel Plaza in Lancaster County off the Pennsylvania Turnpike families are making a pit stop during their Labor Day weekend travel.
"It's the last week that they have a pool so they're going to close it after this weekend," said Ron Staley of Dillsburg, who is heading to Lansdale, "We wanted to help them close it."
It's the unofficial end of summer. And the Zlogers from Harrisburg are going to Ocean City, New Jersey.
"We were going no matter what," said Heather Zloger.
AAA projects there are some people who are putting the brakes on their plans. They say 2.4% fewer Americans will travel this Labor Day weekend than in 2010.
It looks like air travel will decrease, while road travel will increase. AAA forecasts 87% plan to take the road. That's 27.3 million people.
"The turnpike is moving pretty well," said Zloger, "We're a little nervous getting through Philly. We'll see how that goes."
For people who are concerned about traffic on the turnpike, there's an app for that.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission just came out with a new smart phone application for the Droid and iPhone.
The app is called Trip Talk.
Not every family has a smartphone, but Staley does.
"It would be nice to know what to avoid," said Staley, "If I have to get off at an exit earlier."
And it looks like for his family's trip to Lansdale, things will be okay.
The app said, "There are no current advisories for this area."
Monday on the way home, he can find out if it will be the same with so many drivers expected on the road.
