Southern Beaches on Target for Labor Day - Patch.com

Some of Fort Bragg's favorite beach destinations were relatively unscathed by Hurricane Irene's visit last Saturday.

Town officials along the coast want to reassure visitors that most stores, concessions and hotels are in full operating mode.

"It been business as usual for us since Sunday, the day after the storm," said Wrightsville Beach Town Manager Bob Simpson.

Although the Category 1 hurricane came within 30 miles east of the Wrightsville Beach shoreline, little damage was revealed once the winds died down, Simpson said.

"We restricted access to some last weekend _ we had some gawkers and other people who didn't have any business in the area _ but that's all over with now," Simpson said.

Carolina and Kure Beach were similarly treated by Irene, enduring some flooding but little structural damage, officials said.

North Topsail and Surf City also had only modest damage from the hurricane that made landfall near Cape Lookout on Saturday.

According to the Myrtle Beach website, the South Carolina tourist Mecca experienced tropical storm conditions as the hurricane passed 100 miles to the east, with only a few downed trees and other minor problems to show for it. The beaches were back open and welcoming tourists by the first of the week.

The storm took a much harsher toll on the more northern section of coast, including the Outer Banks, where roads were washed out anda new inlet across Hatteras Island was cut, said Rob Young, a specialist in coastal development at Western Carolina University.

Young said he flew over the Outer Banks Aug. 28 to view the damage, noting that the barrier islands backed by large bodies of water, such as the Albemarle and Pamlico sounds, seem to have sustained the worst damage.

A beach renourishment project that added sand along the coast in the Nags Head area seemed to help minimize beach erosion in that area, he added.

Some of the special events planned for Labor Day weekend include:

Bald Head Island, Labor Day Beach Music Extravaganza

Topsail Island - Jazz Concert and fish fry at Ocean City Community Center.

Myrtle Beach - Beach Boogie and BBQ Festival Free festival, featuring family-friendly fun and entertainment, and live music.
