Valley defies Labor Day travel slump - The Desert Sun
Drive safely this Labor Day weekend
Statewide, 3.74 million travelers are expected to travel for the Labor Day holiday weekend, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Of those, 3.05 million are expected to drive to their destination, which is a 0.9 percent increase from last year.
Law enforcement officials want to remind those drivers to stay safe on what are expected to be busy highways.
The following are tips from the Indio California Highway Patrol:
Before you begin any trip, you should always check the condition and air pressure of your tires. Make sure that you have a good inflated spare tire, all the tools necessary to change a tire, and you know how to use them.
Make sure that your vehicle is mechanically sound to make the trip, and have a backup plan just in case you experience a mechanical problem along the way. If you do have a tire blow-out while driving, maintain your car in a straight path, then slowly guide your car to the right shoulder, and slowly bring your car to a stop on the shoulder and completely off of the roadway.
Make sure all occupants are properly secured in the vehicle, that everyone older than 6 years or who weighs more than 60 pounds is wearing their shoulder and lap belts and all children under 6 and/or 60 pounds is in the appropriate safety seat with the seat properly installed.
Observe the speed limit, and don't follow too closely. It is recommended to have 2 to 3 seconds between your vehicle and the vehicle directly ahead of you. Also, don't get distracted or drive while tired. Looking as far down the road as you can see will help you recognize hazards and allow you to safely avoid them. At 70 mph, a vehicle travels approximately 105 ft. every second, which is roughly a football field every 3 seconds.
Never drink and drive. Driving requires a lot of mental focus, and alcohol begins to impair some brain functions with the first drink.
All motorists need to remember to slow down or move over, moving away from highway workers, emergency personnel, and tow trucks along the freeway. Please give them some space.
