WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Saturday after a week off as they take part in their toughest meet of the season, the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic.
The Purdue men enter the weekend on a two meet winning streak after claiming the top spot in the IPFW Invitational and the Indiana Intercollegiate. The win at the Indiana Collegiate was the first for the program in a decade. The men currently boast the No. 8 ranking in the Great Lakes Region. However, they will put that ranking and the two meet winning streak on the line against a total of 28 competing teams on Saturday. The field is highlighted by several great teams including Louisville, Eastern Kentucky, and Alabama. Louisville is currently ranked No. 27 nationally, Eastern Kentucky claims the No. 26 spot, and though Alabama is currently not ranked nationally, it is receiving votes and is No. 4 in the South Region.
On the women's side, Purdue is coming off of a third place finish at the Indiana Intercollegiate, while it also won the IPFW Invite the week prior. On Saturday, the women will compete against 29 other schools in the toughest meet of the year. The women's field, like the men's, is stocked full of top caliber teams including Big Ten foe Michigan, No. 13 in the country and No. 1 in the Great Lakes Region, and No. 24 West Virginia.
The last time out, junior Stephen Schulz and senior Cale Allen finished one-two helping the Boilermakers claim the state championship. Redshirt freshman Dana Payonk was the top finisher for the women's team as she took an eighth place finish at the Indiana Intercollegiate. Stephanie Bonk and Kelly McCurdy were not far behind as they took home 11th and 12th, respectively. Schulz and Allen again will try to lead the men in a more up-tempo race as Payonk, Bonk and McCurdy will attempt to do the same for the women.
Saturday's action will begin at 9:30 a.m. The women's 5K will run first with the men's 8K to follow. Results and a full recap can be found following the race at PurdueSports.com.
