The Mountain West and Conference-USA have agreed to merge to form a super football conference with as many as 22 teams.
The two non-AQ conferences would serve as the divisions with a title game between the winner of the Mountain West and C-USA.
This merger could happen as early as next season.
Some teams however could be leaving the fold for BCS conferences. TCU will be joining the Big-12 conference so they could still have 10 teams with Texas A&M going to the SEC.
Fresno State, Nevada and Hawaii will join the Mountain West in 2012 with Hawaii will only join as a football member.
The Big East has invited a total of five teams of the alliance and it's possible that they all might accept. Boise State and Air Force have been invited to join the Big East. It is highly unlikely that either of them will accept, especially Boise State.
Central Florida has been invited to join the Big East where they could establish a rivalry with South Florida. SMU and Houston were also invited to the Big East and could accept the invitation as well.
This is what the conference would look like when the merger becomes official.
Mountain West
Boise State
Colorado State
San Diego State
Fresno State
UNLV
Wyoming
Hawaii
New Mexico
Nevada
Air Force
C-USA
SMU
Memphis
UCF
Marshall
Rice
Tulane
UAB
Houston
East Carolina
Southern Miss
Tulsa
UTEP
That would be a total of 22 teams, more than any other conference. That alone might be enough for an automatic qualifier bid.
