Chicago police Sunday resumed their search for a man reported missing in Lake Michigan near Oak Street Beach.

Police said the man was with family members Saturday night when he went into the water and was overcome by high waves. Companions tried to rescue him but couldn't pull him in, police said.

Divers searched the lake Sunday morning, but poor underwater visibility forced them to suspend their work. Chicago police spokesman John Mirabelli said the search began again at 4 p.m. Sunday using sonar equipment.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Lauren Jorgensen said the man is a 51-year-old resident of Berkeley. She said the Coast Guard ended its participation in the search about 11 a.m. Sunday in the belief that the man's survival is unlikely.

Officials said they responded to a call of a man in the water near Oak Street Beach at about 9:35 p.m. Saturday. A woman who also was in the water was rescued and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition, said Fire Department spokesman Will Knight.

The nighttime search lasted for several hours and involved a Chicago police helicopter and a Coast Guard helicopter dispatched from Traverse City, Mich. Jorgensen said the Coast Guard also dispatched a boat from Calumet Harbor.

Operations were concentrated on an area from Oak Street Beach south to about Chicago Avenue.
