VIRGINIA BEACH

A locally based Navy SEAL died in Afghanistan on Saturday when his vehicle struck a homemade bomb.

Petty Officer 1st Class Caleb A. Nelson, 26, was on a combat patrol in Zabul province when the explosion occurred, a Defense Department news release said. He was from Omaha, Neb.

Another U.S. service member, who is not a SEAL, was injured, said Lt. Arlo Abrahamson. He did not know the extent of the service member's injuries and said there was no additional information available about the incident.

Capt. Tim Szymanski, commodore of Naval Special Warfare Group Two, offered his condolences to the Nelson family.

"Caleb Nelson was a cherished teammate, a gifted SEAL operator and a loving husband and father," Szymanski said in a recorded statement. "We are deeply saddened by this tremendous loss and yet comforted knowing that Caleb died serving beside the people he loved. ... We will never forget the ultimate sacrifice that Caleb made while protecting our nation and his teammates."

Nelson enlisted in the Navy in August 2005 and began his special warfare training in May 2006. He was assigned to the East Coast-based SEAL unit in December 2006.

Nelson deployed to Iraq in 2009, and then to Afghanistan in March, according to The Associated Press.

His awards and decorations include a Bronze Star with Valor, the Purple Heart, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

He is survived by his wife and two sons in Norfolk and his parents, who still live in Omaha, the Associated Press reported.
