When it comes to family entertainment and you do not live close to a beach, it would seem that normal preference favors indoor water parks. The children can enjoy the thrill and adventure of the water slides and rides whilst the adults can relax uninterrupted in the pools or organise a well-deserved spa treatment. There are attentive waitresses to keep your family's stomach full and there are no sudden storms to ruin your vacation.
Although I individually prefer to spend my family holidays in natural environments such as the beach and the off the beaten track trails in the mountains, I cannot deny the fact that children find indoor waterparks more interesting and exciting. So, I came up with my own best-list in the country.
Number 1 on my list is the H2Oasis in Anchorage, Alaska. The region covers my craving for stunningly beautiful landscapes and the H2Oasis waterpark is just ideal for the kids (and the oldies as well!). The park features 350,000 gallons of water fun and its temperature remains at a blissful 84 degrees. Even if you are not interested trying the rides, wait until you try the 43 foot high Master Blaster ride which stretches 4004 feet long - and is their idea of water roller coaster.
Young ones and oldies alike will want to give this exhilarating ride a try. Apart from the usual wave pool and slides, it also has a herculean 575-foot Never Ending River zigzagging its way right round the park where the whole family can join in a relaxing river walk or simply float on a tube.
Another family favorite is the Avalanche Bay at Boyne Falls, Michigan. Covering 80,000 square feet, this waterpark is giant! It features diverse exhilarating features and activities for all ages. Little ones can have hours of endless entertainment at the Kitz pool with its water fountains, slides and basketball hoops.
Adrenaline junkies will have a brilliant time at the South Wall where they are pushed to reach the top of the vertical wall against a rushing stream of water. You can also attempt crossing the Haute Route and try to make it across using floating icebergs and dangling ropes. Lovers will have a romantic time at the Boyne River where they can simply float down in the quiet of each other's arms or if you feel a bit closed in lately, take a quick drive to the Boyne Mountain Ski Resort where a different winter adventure awaits.
For an African-style waterpark, see Kalahari Waterpark Resort at Sandusky, Ohio. It has both indoor and outdoor water rides covering 80,000 square feet. Practice your surfing skills in its FlowRider where 5-foot waves replicate the motion of the ocean.
