Travelers scramble to avoid Irene - WPEC

PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla. -- The airlines started calling passengers with travel plans to the northeast yesterday.

We found plenty of people who were willing to take the airlines up on their offer to change their flights for no charge. And some people who are just happy to be out of the storms path.

Scott Munrone wasn't going to take any chances with Irene heading north. He flew into Palm Beach International Friday from Nantucket Island.

"In Nantucket it was crazy because everybody wants to get off the Island. This same thing happened last year and going through a hurricane on an island is rough," said Munroe.

Millions of people from North Carolina to Maine have started to head for higher ground. Evacuation routes have been choked with traffic. Still passengers say many flights have been below capacity.

Don Swope from Virginia had to alter his plans to come to Florida for a late summer family vacation. He's also wondering how his house will hold up.

"When the hurricane came, we thought we were going to miss the vacation. Then we thought, we'll make it to Florida, but our house is going to take a pounding. Because that's going to get hit pretty hard up there," said Swope.

David Sweet had to cancel his trip to New York City to see a Dave Matthews concert this weekend. The consolation prize is getting to come to Palm Beach County.

"We decided, rather to be safe, get down here, get away from the weather, and just go with that plan," saod Sweet.

Transportation officials warn they don't know how air and road travel will be effected by Monday.

They advise everyone who has travel plans to stay in contact with their airline. Even if you don't have plans to travel to the northeast, a lot of delays and cancelations are expected to effect the entire country. Many of the airports are expected to close in the northeast tommorrow.
