CHICAGO—
This Labor Day weekend might find more Chicagoans grilling rather than driving.A spokesperson with AAA says gas prices have been too high for too long, so many motorists are choosing to stay off the road this holiday weekend.
The average price of gas in Illinois is at $3.80. In Chicago it's even higher, averaging well above four dollars. Add to that a prevailing sense of malaise about the economy, and you get a lot of Illinois residents taking a "staycation" this Labor Day weekend.Air travel is also taking a hit. About 1.7 million Illinois residents are flying this weekend, but that too is below past averages.
The good news for those who are driving: IDOT has halted all construction work on Illinois roadways until Monday evening, so highway traffic should be running smoothly.
As always, state troopers will be out looking for, what they call, the "fatal four": distracted driving, impaired drivers, speeding and no seat belt use.
